Stage 1 Outdoor Education Camp: Onkaparinga National Park

Thirteen elite Year 10 Stage 1 Outdoor Education students braved the elements last week in the beautiful Adelaide Hills. Rain jackets were out in full force as we explored our way through the Onkaparinga River National Park. The rain settled and spirits rose as we were rewarded to exceptional views down the valley and stumbled our way to a magnificent waterhole that not many would be able to find. A total of 10km were trudged out for the day. A wet night awaited us at Pink Gums Campsite but a campfire warmed us well before heading to our dry tents for a well-deserved rest. Day two saw a short drive to Belair National Park to tackle their orienteering course. The rain held off and between the group, we found every marker in the challenging course. A highlight of the camp was the mountain biking session with the Escape Goat crew. A slight drizzle that day meant we were covered in mud, but still smiling from ear to ear throughout the three-hour session which included some gnarly downhill descends and opportunities to hit some kickers. Exhausted, we surrounded the campfire to share stories of our day and partake in a bit of campfire karaoke.

Any food was good food and most were tucked away dry and warm by 8:30pm after a few rounds of Hide and Seek. Our final day saw the sun arrive and warm the rock we went about climbing for 3 hours with Adventure Systems. The attitude of the students was amazing as they pushed themselves to get up the 25m cliff face and treat themselves to cracking views on the way down the abseil.

An awesome week with a brilliant crew of outdoor enthusiasts.

Altitude Day:

yLead Leadership Conference

On Wednesday 31 May the Year 9 Middle Years Leaders attended yLead’s Leadership Conference called Altitude Day. This program is designed to inspire students to lead other people and have a positive influence on the world around them. The day consisted of several fun interactive activities with different schools, listening to inspirational speakers and reflecting on the type of leader they might want to be one day. The challenge for our leaders now is to transfer their ‘actual’ into the ‘possible’ to see their potential reached.

Central School of Art Excursion

The Year 10 Art students recently had the opportunity to explore life drawing through a workshop excursion at the Central School of Art guided by accomplished artists Alix Beckinsale and Serian Kitchener.

They learned the fundamentals of figure drawing, sharpened their observational skills, and gained insights into the importance of understanding human anatomy and proportions in their artwork.

Life drawing helps students understand the complexity of the human form. It teaches students to observe and analyse the world with greater precision and attention to detail since engaging with a live model reveals subtle nuances in posture, weight distribution, and muscle tension that can be overlooked when working from photographs or imagination.

The workshop started with warm-up exercises emphasizing gesture drawing and contour line techniques to convey movement and structure. Students then worked on longer poses to delve into detail and shading with charcoal. Artists Alix Beckinsale and Serian Kitchener taught basic anatomical shapes, proportions, angles, and light-shadow balance.

After lunch the students were taken on a tour of the facilities to see why the Central School of Art was ranked as the best art school in Australia.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and tour, noting how understanding anatomy improved their drawings. Students also appreciated seeing what tertiary level art looks like.

Year 10 Digital Communications Excursion:

Adelaide CBD

Recently the Year 10 Digital Communications students attended a walking excursion through the city to explore different types of photography. Students were able to capture street photography in Rundle Mall, food photography in the Central Markets and sought out architectural photography through the heritage listed buildings of the Adelaide CBD.

Students had the opportunity to capture a variety of photographs which they planned out and which will contribute to their Major Folio for this term.

The students enjoyed their time exploring the city and were able to capture a plethora of photos outside of the school setting to strengthen their understanding and practical skills.
