Indonesian

During semester 1 of year 11 Indonesian students had the opportunity to learn about various cultural and religious ceremonies in Indonesia.

To celebrate their hard work and engagement throughout the year, we held our very own "selamatan" which is a type of communal feast specific to Javanese culture. It symbolizes social unity and can be used to celebrate most events such as birth, marriage, death or even moving to a new house. Students and myself each brought snacks to be contributed to the feast, this included some homemade baked goods as well Indonesian foods such as kerupuk (prawn cracker), keripik singkong (cassava chips), teh kotak (box tea) and even the world famous smelly fruit that is, durian. The latter wasn't a crowd favourite, but I admire the students' bravery in trying it. All in all the selamatan was a success!
