Rector's Reflection -

Spirit & Vision Part 3

The Spirit and Vision of Bishop Eugene de Mazenod are

Planted in Australia

Part 3

At the beginning of 1950 the pace of development in Australia accelerated. A residence at 649 Burke Road, Camberwell, Victoria, was purchased. This residence was to become the ‘Mission House’ where the Missionary Oblates, who were on the preaching staff, would reside rather undertaking the long distance and time it took

to travel from Sorrento.  The residence at Camberwell has served many needs and continues as the office for the Australian Oblate Provincial and staff, the office of The Director and staff of the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate. A new residence (right) was built and opened in 1970 to accommodate various Oblate ministries and a residence for future retired Oblates.

One of the ministries from the Camberwell Community that the Oblates are committed to is Catholic Theological College. From the beginning the Oblates have been on the faculty with Fr Austin Cooper OMI the foundation Master. Over the years the Oblates have continued our involvement through lecturing in various subjects.

Catholic Theological College (CTC) was established in 1972 by a group of dioceses and

religious orders which agreed to act together as a confederated body in academic

matters. Catholic Theological College has been located in various parts of Melbourne since its beginning in 1972 at Corpus Christi Seminary, Glen Waverley. In 1973-1998 it was located at Clayton (picture right) and since 1999 has been in East Melbourne (below), the site of Parade College 1871-1967 and Cathedral College 1968-1994.

Catholic Theological College is committed to the highest standards of teaching and research in philosophy and theology, within the Catholic tradition. It collaborates in the Church’s mission to spread the Gospel and provides academic formation for people committed to the pastoral service of the Church.  In 1973, CTC became a recognised Teaching Institution of University of Divinity, which was constituted as a degree-granting body by the Parliament of Victoria in 1910.
