Year 10 – 12 Physical Education students have been fortunate to utilise GPS sport trackers in their respective courses. These devices replicate the standards of elite sporting clubs across the country. Year 11 students have kindly shared some of their learnings and experiences below.

In PE, we completed a practical where we participated in a game of International Rules and were tracked via GPS technology. The data showed my top speed was 23km/hour. I compared this to Collingwood AFL player, Chris Mayne, in a recent match against the Mighty Hawks. Mayne was the fastest player on the field and recorded a top speed of 32km/hour. This highlights the differences in fitness capabilities between elite athletes and Mazenod College students.  Aden Rubino

The GPS units provided accurate data on distance, speed, and intensity during our PE lesson. They are an objective measurement tool as there was no cognitive processing required from the participants. Matthew Di Ciero & Andrew Samawi

In comparison to other measurement tools, they do not give accurate information on sedentary behaviour. The devices are not designed to measure participants who are sitting or lying down which characterises sedentary behaviour. Ryan Illipparampil

GPS trackers can be an effective motivational tool for people undertaking physical activity. However, this could be a disadvantage as they are likely to be reactive; wearing a GPS tracker may change the individual’s normal behaviour during the activity. Ashen Perera
