Mandarin

What is happening in the Mandarin room?

If language and communication bring you “power”, then culture brings you “grace”. In the Mandarin room, students have been practising conversation as well as learning about cultural topics, which prepares them to become global citizens. They acquire new knowledge through inquiry, discussion, collaboration, experience and experimentation.

Year 4 students said “wo xi huan Gong Fu (I like Kung Fu)” at the end of the lesson. They also experienced “tiao pi jing”—Chinese jumping rope.

Year 2 students were reading the Chinese characters for the numbers from 1 to 20 in order to solve a puzzle.

Prep students were experiencing “Qi Qiao Ban (Tangram)”, an old Chinese puzzle, to make “xiao mao (kitty)” or “xiao gou (puppy)”.

Year 5 students learned about “Jian Zhi (paper cutting)”. They were cutting a Chinese symbol for “double joy”.

Chinese characters originated from nature. The students went outdoors to get inspiration and understanding about Hanzi (Chinese characters). They drew some symbols and made Hanzi on their books.

Year 1 students loved experimenting about “Yan Se (colours)”. While mixing the primary colours to get secondary colours, they explored and practised new vocabulary!

Learning language is fun!
