Science

Term 1

We have had a fabulous start to Science in Term 1 with Biology as the focus. Our pet spiny leaf insects have produced 15 eggs which we are carefully tending to as this precious species typically takes 4-19 months to hatch! The students are keeping a close eye on them just in case they witness this spectacular event.

This term the Prep’s are learning how to take care of pets and will be helping out with the guinea pigs. Meeting the class pets will help them understand the needs of different animals. The grade 1/2’s are learning about the features of different small animals such as insects. They will get a close up look at some creepy critters using magnifying glasses to determine how they use their body parts for feeding, moving and protection. The students are also developing skills in recording and presenting scientific observations.

The grade 3/4’s are focusing on the growth of plants and the various stages a plant goes through. They have observed seeds and various types of leaves in the classroom and will be germinating their own seed over the next few weeks.

The grade 5/6’s have started discovering the adaptations of plants and animals that live in the desert by testing water loss in leaves. They will continue learning about the structural and behavioural features of these species whilst refining their skills in experimental design and analysing results
