Coffee Cups

This year, Year 5 had the plan of selling coffee cups for the Sustainability Market. We designed them with the Galilee logo and the saying, ‘Saving the World One Cup at a Time’. We really believe that to save our world we need to be more sustainable. In Year 5 we truly care about our environment. We are trying to support the marine life, who are suffering from the plastic in their habitat. Coffee cups are one of the world’s worst rubbish problems.

So far, we have raised over $400 for our Kitchen Garden.

If you are interested in buying a coffee cup, please contact Ms Otte. A single coffee cup it is $10. Please help us to make our community a better place. Thanks from all the Year 5’s!

Debating in Year 5

This term, Year Five have been looking at debating. Debating is a form of an argument where two teams of three argue to get the audience and adjudicator on their side.

We have learnt how to deliver our arguments using strong techniques, rubbuttals and sentence stems.  These are some examples of sentence stems... ‘as for me’, ‘you’re not serious, are you?’, ‘Let’s face it’, ‘as I take it’ and ‘In addition’.  Some examples of different techniques we used are…

Opinion:

An opinion is a debaters thought about the topic.

Rule of three:

Rule of three is three adjectives used in one sentence to make the reader engaged.

Exaggeration:

Exaggeration means making something bigger than it already is.

Emotive language:

Emotive language is making the reader actually feel like what you are talking about.

At the Week 5 assembly, Year Fives showcased two debate arguments. One was on ‘Why Netball is Better Than Basketball’ and the other ‘Why Being an Only Child is Better Than Having Siblings’. In debate there are many different roles but the most important roles are the timekeeper, chairman and adjudicator. To help debaters know what to say they use cue cards. In our classroom we have been doing one on one debates with different topics and group debates. We really enjoy debating and it shows our passion for different topics.

MATHS IN YEAR 50 and 5F

This term in Year Five maths lessons we have been learning about Money! So far we have learnt so many new things like how to calculate discounts, how to create basic budgets and there is still more to learn.

One activity we’ve done so far is we have planned a journey to the zoo for our family. We had to think about all the different costs involved with the trip including public transport costs, entry fees, food and drink, experiences and of course spending money at the gift shop.  At the start we had to set a budget for everything, but most people went over. At the end we added up all of the prices, some students family outing was really high. One students trip to the zoo cost over $1700! We have also been looking at a trip to the theatre. We were allowed to buy whatever we wanted but it had to be reasonable (we got more than reasonable). So that’s a snapshot of maths in 50 and 5F.

Carols Night

On Wednesday the 5th of December, Galilee will be holding our annual Carols Night. All classes will be singing Christmas songs as well as the school choir. The night will be from 5pm to 7pm. Year levels have already started rehearsing their carols in Performing Art classes with Miss Carnovale. Santa will also be making a special guest appearance. He is coming all the way from the North Pole just for us!

There will be a pizza van and a burger van which will be serving food all night. There will also be a bar that will serve beer, wine and sparkling for the adults and soft drinks for the kids. The Year 5 students will also be running a special Pedal Powered Juice Bar for all ages to enjoy!

This Carols Night will be a sustainable event. If you choose to bring a reusable plastic cup (you could also bring your reusable coffee cup that the Year 5 classes were selling), there will be a discount on you drinks that you purchase from the bar.

Thank you so much! We hope to see you there!

Walk to School

Every year Galilee participates in ‘Walk to School Month’. When you participate in walk to school you must try to walk, ride, scoot or take public transport to and from school everyday from the 8th of October to the 2nd of November. Although everyone should try to make an effort to walk, ride or scoot to school everyday. Galilee as a school participates in this event so that we can build healthy habits for life and for the earth because when you travel by car whether it’s to work, school or somewhere else your car releases greenhouse gases that get stuck in the Ozone Layer. The Year 5’s have been going around every morning to ask the children how they got home the night before and how they got to school that morning. Thank you to everyone for participating and trying their best. Miss otte will be announcing the class winner in a couple of weeks.
