Year 1 Teacher

This term in Grade 1 we are focused on listening to each other with understanding and empathy. This is important for us because we can understand how our friends and family is feeling. This helps us be better friends to others and have our friends understand us.

Sometimes we are feeling sad, bad, annoyed or angry. It’s important for our friends to understand how we feel and how we’d like them to help us. When we see our friend feeling bad, it easier to help them when they can tell us how they feel.

We are reading lots of books and discussing what characters are feeling, why, and how they deal with them.

We can see when someone is upset and ask how they’d like us to help them. They might want us to play with them, or sit quietly with them, or to leave them alone. We need to listen to them to find out which one they prefer.

We all have different things we like to happen when we’re upset.

We’ve explored what emotions look like by making faces and taking photos of them, discussing the range of different expressions we made for each one. We’re discussing what can cause different feelings in our daily life and how we deal with those situations.
