From the Principal

Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF)

This weekend the ACYF comes to Perth. We will have student representation from Years 9, 10 and 11 and staff participation through Miss Ball, Miss Casey, Miss Worthy and Mr Thompson. It is an opportunity for our students and staff to interact with other young Catholics from around the country. Over 5000 young people will be in attendance and our College is hosting two groups from other Jesuit schools; St Aloysius from Sydney and Xavier College, Hervey Bay. We wish our participants and all other attendees well for a wonderful faith filled experience.

Winning with grace and losing with dignity

I have a close friend who is a New Zealander. Our friendship has spanned three decades which is quite remarkable given we have not lived in the same city since 1989. We often discuss the relative merits of our two countries and politics and sport are often the topics of conversation.

In recent times, I have deferred to the wonderful grace and dignity shown by prominent New Zealanders. The poise of their Prime Minister in dealing with conflict and tragedy has been matched by their cricket and rugby captains when losing World Cup matches. Dignity in losing is important. Winning with grace is equally important. Closer to home, I recall the Richmond AFL captain Trent Cotchin, picking up rubbish in the change room hours after his side had won its way through to an AFL grand final. He is a class act.

At the end of each school year, awards are presented to students who have excelled in various pursuits. We are always thrilled to acknowledge good performances and good efforts. It is also an educative experience for both the students being acknowledged and the students missing out on awards. In rehearsals we discuss shaking hands; looking up at the person presenting the award and saying thank you. For some students, it all comes very naturally. For others, it does require some training and support.

Congratulations to all our award winners this year and to all others who have contributed so positively in so many ways at the College. Ultimately, those with the best attitude and work ethic tend to be success stories of the future.
