Junior School News

Get organised, get involved, get focused

Welcome back to 2019 and a special welcome to our new students, parents and guardians to the Glen Eira College community. We look forward to working with you throughout 2019. We acknowledge that learning is a partnership between all members in a student’s life and welcome all communication to work together to aspire to our best learning outcomes.

I would like to thank all returning students for their focused and calm start to the year. The learning occurring in each and every room has been a pleasure to see.

We have an Information Session on Wednesday 20th February for all Year 7 families 5.30pm - 6.30pm.  Hope to see you there.

Junior School Captains

Congratulations to our Junior School Captains in their leadership role. We look forward to the contribution you will make throughout the course of the year. Junior school students are welcome to call on the assistance of these students to assist in their time at GEC.

Haddi El Shorbagy, Yashasvi Agrawal, Darcy Messenger and Sebastian Buley-Delanty.

Year 7

Our Year 7 students have had a positive start to their learning at GEC. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm over the first weeks of secondary school and their efforts in creating new links with peers. Year 7 students have had an opportunity to experience all their new classes along with a study session run through Elevate Education to kick start their positive study habits.

Year 7 camp is also fast approaching. Further information will be sent out this week, please contact the school if you have not received this by the end of the week.

Year 9 Program

Our Year 9 program has gotten off to a great start. The focus of this program is for Year 9 students to be actively involved in their local community. Students will experience a number of incursions and excursions with the aim to increase awareness around a number of issues our community faces and work to help reduce the impact of these issues. Students will shortly participate in an indigenous walk and scavenger hunt and a beach clean-up day.

Elevate Education

On the 11th and 12th of February, Elevate Education visited our Year 7 and 9 students to teach them strategies around time management and memory mnemonics, designed to get students thinking about organisation and move students away from rote learning. Developing positive study habits from Year 7 will set our students up for success, but this should be reinforced both at school and at home.

Please explore Elevate Education’s website for more information and to access the Student Portal which has many tutorials on developing positive memory and organisational skills, please visit: https://austudent.elevateeducation.com/ We ask that you have a conversation around the learning your student has gained from this session and assist them to put new strategies into place around their study, in particular revision strategies at home.

Key Messages in Junior School

  • Learning starts at 9am - We appreciate your efforts in working together to have students at school and ready to learn by 9am. This is paramount for the best learning to occur and to set positive habits in place for students’ futures.
  • Correct uniform - all students should now be wearing the correct uniform. If there are queries about this, please refer to the uniform policy set out in the Student Planners.
  • Step outside your comfort zone - it is where the magic happens.
  • Attitude to learning - we all get to choose how we respond to situations in our life and learning is no different. Having a positive attitude to our learning will open many opportunities to take our learning further.
