Assistant Principal News

Now is the time Year 12!

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

This week has been one of many important ones for Year 12 Students on their quest for pride and success in their HSC. On Monday, HSC Mid Course Reports were emailed to parents. I urge parents and students to take particular note of the affirmation, advice and feedback given in both the Commendations and Recommendations section of the report.

In addition to this, last night, Year 12 Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences were held in the Language Centre. I wish to thank all the parents, teachers and students involved. These conferences provide a vital opportunity for discussion and creation of a plan for students to improve their learning and understanding of concepts, outcomes and skills. Walking around the room, I noticed a range of positive and productive conversations aimed at enhancing student progress.

It is crucial that parents and students that unfortunately could not attend the interviews last night, make a time to meet with their teachers in order to develop a collaborative learning plan leading into the Trial Exams.

For Year 12 students now is the time for action. It is not too late to begin to develop a study timetable. The next few weeks loom as a pivotal opportunity for students to collate, develop, learn and refine their study notes. If this is done now, students will have time to complete past papers and questions in preparation for their Trial Exams. Students - now is the time to make a commitment to yourself, your parents and your teachers, that you will take responsibility for your learning and take pride in your performance.

I look forward to seeing Year 12 reflect and refocus in the coming weeks and months. Below are some reflection questions for Year 12 Parents and Students to discuss in preparation for their last Semester at Marian Catholic College.

Year 12 Mid Course Reflection

Do you have regular meetings with your mentor?

Do you have a specific and realistic study timetable?

Are you building study notes for all of your subject areas and topics?

Do you know exactly what you need to do to improve your understanding and results in each of your subject areas?

Are you making the most of your learning by attending and participating in all possible classes?

Are there some sacrifices you need to start making from your social/work life in order to be better prepared for the HSC?

The Success of NAPLAN Online @ MCC

I am pleased to inform you that we have this week completed our first full NAPLAN Online Testing Period at Marian Catholic College - and it was an absolute success!

Students of Years 7 and 9 sat tests in Writing, Reading, Language and Numeracy using their laptops under exam conditions. These tests were administered smoothly and efficiently with no major disruptions or connectivity issues. This was due to the amazing and dedicated team of teachers and support staff who worked collaboratively to ensure MCC continued the meet the high standards that we have set. I wish to acknowledge the outstanding work of Mrs Fisher, Mr Seers and Mr Summerville for their organisation and administration, Pastoral Coordinators of Year 7 and 9 Mr Moore and Mr Lawler for their care and support of their year groups, test administrators Mr Dal Nevo, Miss Polimeni, Miss Davis and Mr Lyon, Mrs Turunen for her coordination of Special Provisions and the IT expertise of Mr Crosato and Mr Condon. In addition, I wish to acknowledge the behaviour, maturity and patience of all Year 7 and 9 students.

Well done to all involved - we now all eagerly await the results!

Yours in learning,

Lora Segrave and Damien Herb
