Leadership Day

On Thursday the 11th of March, the School Captains and Vice Captains were invited to Scoresby Secondary College to have a day of developing their leadership skills. We were there with 5 other local schools - Kent Park, Mountain Gate, Carrington, Knox Gardens and Knox Park.

We were welcomed in the morning by Mr Dempsey and Scoresby Secondary School student leaders. Miss Whittington and Mrs Maguire were also there.

We played games and worked on whole school projects such as organising a sausage sizzle and a free dress day. At the end of the day we had to share our learning and were presented with a certificate from Members of Parliament, Mr Kim Wells and Mr Nick Wakeling.

It was a fun day and we learnt a lot!

Year 6 Debating Program

On Monday the 15th of March, 18 of the year 6’s had a 3-hour lesson all about debating. 9 year 7’s came to the school from Heritage College in Knox to help us learn all about the rules of debating and also a teacher, Ms. Theobald.

Throughout the 3 hours of the lesson, we had learning about debating. We also did a debate on the topic ‘zebras are better than giraffes’. We learnt that there are 2 sides to a debate, affirmative and negative, affirmative being the team who is for or agrees with the given topic and negative being the team who is against or disagrees with the given topic.

We also learnt about the different ways to make an argument interesting - ‘Matter, Manner, Method’. Matter is what you talk about in your argument, like ‘giraffes have longer necks which means they can be seen easier than zebras’. That is an argument. Manner is the body language or hand and wrist movements you show which could emphasise a sentence. Method is the understanding of the rules of debating and/or what you’re talking about.

We had half an hour to prepare a debate to argue against the other team. I was on a team with Sheena and Sarah. Sarah was the first speaker which meant she introduced her name, my name and Sheena’s. She also stated 2 arguments for Sheena and I to elaborate on. Then the second speaker talks about why an argument the first speaker on the opposing side was or might be wrong and introduces another 2 arguments. Finally, the third speaker rebuts on everything if they are on the negative side. If they are on the affirmative side, they still rebut on everything except the third speaker on the negative team.  Sadly, we lost our debate but both our teams equally won each debate. We all had fun learning about debating and hope to be able to use it soon in our writing or just in our everyday lives!
