Annastashia and Jane from the Junior school shared some of their insights into their social and emotional learning in Term 1. The girls spoke about how they enjoyed doing SEL because it helps them to learn more about their emotions and actions. They felt that when the kids at school try to understand their feelings and think about how they can respond to things in positive ways it not only helps the classroom become calmer but helps people to think about their choices and what they are going to do next.

The girl's explanations illustrate the impact learning about self and social awareness is having on their emotional growth.

"In SEL we have been learning about the Zones of Regulation, Growth Mindset, and Stop! Think! Do! I have liked learning about Stop, Think Do because it helps people to be calm by stopping and thinking about what they say. I have been using it. At home, I can get angry with my sister. I try to stop and think about what I am going to do. I use it at school with my friends. " - Annastashia

"I think I have learned how to think before I act. I have liked the Zones of Regulation. We have learned about our emotions which we also call our feelings. It is important to learn about our feelings so we can use them. We have learned it is OK to be angry but we know that it is not ok to shout or throw stuff."- Jane

Students across all levels will be focusing more on the elements of Stop! Think! Do! in term 2 to continue developing their ability to identify different choices they can make when faced with challenging social situations. As teachers, we know that if we use consistent language it will enhance children's understanding when they are faced with challenges.
