Year 3/4 Term 2 Overview

Year 3/4 Term Two 2021

Welcome Parents and Families to Term 2!

What a wonderful start to the year our students had in Term 1 with so many exciting and memorable events such as Twilight Sports, Summer Sports Day, Harmony Day, Experience Whitefriars day and many more. We are looking forward to continuing to settle into a consistent routine with the students at school and participate in many more engaging and fun learning activities.

This term Monica O’Shannassy will be returning to the classroom to support our students learning. She will be replacing Marissa Box and teaching Physical Education and STEM with both 3/4 classes. We are very excited to have Monica back working with our students in 3/4 and grateful for Marissa’s excellent work done in Term 1.

We also would like to welcome Sherie Robertson to our 3/4 learning area. Sherie will be working as an Learning Support Officer for 5 days a week, to support our students. We are very excited to get to know Sherie more as the term progresses.

Religious Education

In Religious Education students will be exploring the concept of ‘change’. This focus will link closely to our Inquiry unit and allow us to investigate topics such as:

  • Belonging to church and school community
  • Key people/figures from church history
  • Events of Pentecost
  • Catholic traditions and connections between family, local parish and archdiocese.

Inquiry - History

This term our Inquiry unit titled “How can we inspire change?”  will be based on the History curriculum. Students will be exploring the concepts of identity, community and perspective, whilst learning about Australian history.

We will be examining significant key events of early Australian history, including:

  • Who were Australia’s first occupants?
  • What were the consequences of early European settlement?
  • Who were the people that migrated to Australia and what are their stories?
  • What role did diverse backgrounds play in the development of Australia as a new country?

English

In Reading, students will engage in a range of comprehension, spelling and handwriting activities. We will be rotating focus group activities where students will be improving their comprehension skills by making predictions, improving vocabulary, developing meaning of words in context and making inferences. They will critically analyse the text, using prior knowledge to form opinions and discussing a particular point of view.  We will be further utilising Reading Eggspress through weekly comprehension tasks individually set for students to complete during reading rotations.

In Writing, students will be learning to write interesting and convincing persuasive texts. They will be focussing on the structure, language and effective persuasive strategies that can be used to convince a reader to agree with their position.

Mathematics

Through independent, small and large group activities students will explore the following concepts:

Fractions

  • Model, count and represent fractions on a number line including improper fractions.
  • Investigate equivalent fractions and compare and order fractions according to value.

Time

  • Practise telling the time in analogue and digital format and introduce 24 hour time.
  • Estimate and calculate the time required to perform tasks.
  • Solve problems involving timelines and timetables including elapsed time.

Measurement & Geometry (Lines and Angles)

  • Compare and describe two dimensional shapes (polygons) using properties including the measurement of interior and exterior angles in degrees.

Multiplication and Division

  • Recall multiplication facts up to 10 X10.
  • Develop efficient mental and written strategies for multiplication where there is no reminder.
  • Understand the relationship between multiplication and division.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

This term in SEL our 3/4 students will be exploring the links between their emotions and behaviour. Students will learn to recognise and name their own positive strengths, identifying coping strategies in stressful events and identifying stress management strategies that they can use.

Home Learning

Home learning will continue again this semester with students beginning this in Week 2. We appreciate the fantastic support from all families as we look to build students’ time management and organisational skills.

If you need the link emailed again please contact your child’s teacher.
