Year 1/2 Term 2 Overview

Year 1/2 Term Two

Welcome back to Term 2 at St John's. We sincerely hope you enjoyed a well deserved break with your families and look forward to continuing our learning journey together.

Religious Education:

Our initial focus for this term is on the Easter story and the appearances of Jesus to his disciples following the Resurrection. In connecting with our Inquiry focus we will be looking at Bible characters who experienced change and how it affected them. These will include Daniel and Noah from the Old Testament, the disciples at Pentecost and Mary and the angel Gabriel.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics we will continue our professional development with Monash University (EMC3- Exploring Mathematical Challenges) where we meet and plan with Maths Leaders to provide a challenging and extensive maths program.

Our topics will include

  • Making things equal: using addition and subtraction to balance both sides of the equal sign.
  • Data representation: making graphs and interpreting the information in the graph, using data that we have collected.
  • Location: using directional language to describe the position of an object.
  • 2D and 3D shapes: analysing the features of different shapes and how we categorise them.

English:

In Reading we will continue to work on developing comprehension, fluency and expression, with a focus in reading groups, on the following grammatical foci:

  • chunking
  • nouns
  • adjectives
  • verbs
  • adverbs

In Writing, our focus this term will be on narrative writing. Students will learn the features of narratives including characters, setting and structure. We will be exploring various  Dreamtime stories to engage students in this genre of writing. Students will produce their own narrative in the style of a dreamtime story to demonstrate their understanding of how a narrative is written. We will also explore poetry towards the end of term and some of the different styles of poems that are used.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Our focus for SEL this term is on Self Management and the development of Resilience. Students will work on identifying personal strengths and describe how these strengths are useful in school or family life.

Inquiry:

How do we inspire change?

Students will use this question to explore the history of toys and games over time. They will have opportunities to create some older style toys as well as hands on experience with the Melbourne Museum's "Toys from the Past" time capsule.  Our aim is to identify toys from our time to share in the future to inspire change.  Students will be designing and creating a virtual time capsule to explain their choices.

Home Learning

  • Reading - Daily reading and recording in reading records.
  • Reading Eggs - A variety or reading tasks to build comprehension and word knowledge skills
  • Mathematics - Tasks will be set in Mathletics relating to classroom topics to consolidate learning. It is not expected that students would complete all tasks in one sitting. Students are encouraged to revisit topics from last term and consolidate their understanding by using the available mathletics tasks relating to these topics.

Specialists

Students will continue to have specialist classes towards the end of the week (please see timetable below). They will be required to wear their sport uniforms on Tuesday and Friday. They will also need to bring in their library bag and books on a Friday.
