Prep Term 2 Overview

Prep 2021 Term Two

Prep Term 2 Overview 2021

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you enjoyed a well deserved break with your families and I look forward to continuing our learning journey together in the classroom.

Religious Education

Our initial focus for this term is on the Easter story and the appearances of Jesus to his disciples following the Resurrection. In connecting with our Inquiry focus we will be looking at Bible characters who experienced change and how it affected them. These will include Daniel and Noah from the Old Testament, the disciples at Pentecost, Mary and the Angel Gabriel.

English

We will be consolidating our reading and writing skills this term, particularly looking at the purpose of entertaining our reader.

In Reading, we will compare and contrast books and unpack the author's use of language and its purpose. Students will continue to learn strategies for identifying unknown words when reading, writing and spelling, such as chunking, reading around the word and re-reading.

During Writing, we will deconstruct the elements of a story, including characters, plot, setting and structure. We will then use our knowledge of each element to change stories and the endings, as well as create a short story of our own.

Mathematics

This term we will continue to have a focus on interpreting data for the first week, to connect and build on from last term's learning. We will focus on counting and place value, as well as skip counting in 5’s and 10’s. The students will become more familiar with addition and subtraction equations, positional language and sequencing events.

Inquiry

How do we inspire change?

Students will use this question to explore the history of toys and games over time. They will have opportunities to create some older style toys as well as hands on experience with the Melbourne Museum's "Toys from the Past" time capsule. Our aim is to identify toys from current times that we would like to share in the future, to inspire change.  Students will be creating a virtual time capsule to explain their choices.

Social and Emotional Learning

In Social and Emotional Learning we will be exploring self management. This includes managing our emotions and identifying positive strengths. Many of the skills taught this term will be generalised social skills to assist with cooperative play and work while at school.

Specialists

Students will continue to have specialist classes on Thursday and Friday (please see timetable below). They are required to wear their sport uniforms on Tuesday and Friday. They will also need to bring in their library bag and books every Friday.
