Our Big Back Yard (OBBY)  Launch  - West Torrens

During the recent school holidays on Thursday, 22nd April,at the River Torrens, Sherriff Street & Chatswood Grove location in Underdale, our Big Backyard team proudly launched the full set of OBBY resources.

I am extremely proud of our dedicated Lockleys North Primary School students including Isaac, Chloe, Liam, Lucas M, Lucas H and Nayia, who have been local champions, sharing their voice at the working group level on the OBBY committee, since August 2019.  Lockleys North Primary School, Lockleys Children’s Centre, Cowandilla Primary School and Children’s Centre and Torrensville Primary School are partners in this new project alongside the City of West Torrens and Department of Human Services and Green Adelaide.

Despite the cool start to the day, the event was highly successful, full of collaboration, critical thinking and creativity, with the most popular activity being the River Torrens Boat Race.

"At the OBBY launch a group of LNPS students used materials we found in the nearby trees to create a 2 metre boat which sailed almost 40 metres along the River Torrens. We also used berries and leaves to create a red potion"  Liam F15

Isaac, a proud Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri man welcomed everyone to country and performed for the group on his digeridoo, showcasing many birds and animals, including ones local to the Karrawirra Pari (River Torrens).

"The bark from the trees that we used to build the boat had big holes in it, so we used dried grass to block them and the boat floated.  When people get their OBBY resource pack they should ask their parents to take them to the places and discover new things in nature." Isaac T16

The resource pack including 5 exciting locations to explore and a map with 50 things to do in West Torrens whichwill bedistributed through the school in the coming weeks.
