Snapshot of Learning

School Environmental Group

Our school has well established vegetable beds, numerous compost bins and worm farms as well as a fully decked out chicken coop to house five happy chickens.

Each year we continue to develop the garden space. We collect food scraps from all of our twenty-six classrooms and have well established compost bins and worm farms to process these food scraps collected on a daily basis. We have six large raised veggie beds and five beautiful cheeky chickens that help create rich compost and produce yummy eggs.

In recent times we have added a colourful fence around the garden space which was part of a legacy piece created and decorated by our past year six students from 2019 with guidance and support from Mrs Mel Wharton, our previous art teacher.

Our garden space is regularly visited by students who just need some time away from the classroom to refocus and benefit from its calm, peaceful surroundings and enjoy cuddling one of our friendly chickens.

Our wonderful Year 6 Environment Leaders are Shamaya, Matthew, Amelie and Brady.

Mrs Solari and I are so grateful to our Year 6 Environment Leaders as every day they care for the chickens and monitor the food waste in our compost bins and worm farms.

Later on in Term Two our Year Six Environmental leaders will hold gardening sessions at lunch time with the assistance of Mrs Solari and myself.

We have a number of exciting projects this year such as Nude Food Thursday, whereby students are encouraged to bring in healthy food with as little processing and packaging as possible.

Furthermore, we will continue to support Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs which assists disadvantaged people in South Africa to buy wheelchairs.

Last year we collected over 15,000 plastic bread tags to not only support Aussie Bread Tags but we also saved them from landfill!

This Year we have set a school target of 40,000 bread tags by the end of this year to support Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs.

You may have seen our passionate Year Six Environmental leaders on the last day of Term One selling eggs and herbs at our market stall. Please come and say hello and buy some of our organic produce as all the money raised at our market stalls goes directly towards the care and upkeep of our garden space.
