MIDDLE SCHOOL
NGV Excursion
On Tuesday, 4 September, the year 9 Art students visited the National Gallery of Victoria to view the Museum of Modern Art Exhibition.
The students were fantastic school ambassadors; appreciating all the weird and wonderful pieces the exhibition had to offer. The students will now be creating their own artworks inspired by a piece that they loved from the exhibition. Here are some student comments about the day.
There was a piece of artwork I liked that was a wall with people’s names. Your height is where your name went and there was a part that was lots of black in one spot because a lot of people are around that height.

I enjoyed the Marilyn Monroe artwork by Andy Warhol. I thought that it was very intricate and I liked how the colours contrasted.
Lauren 9F
My favourite part of the excursion was probably the entire experience of being able to go to NGV with my classmates.
Faye 9J
My favourite thing was that I got to see a lot of famous paintings and some amazing ideas of art.

MyFuture - South Melbourne Market
The Year 9 cohort recently travelled to the South Melbourne Market for My Future subject on the 5th of September. The excursion was not only an enjoyable tour but also a great opportunity for students to gain an insight of the interaction between the local community and the market.
In 1856, a petition from local householders highlighting the need for a market was sent to Emerald Hill Council. A decade later, South Melbourne Market was officially opened to the public on 10 acres covering the area bounded by Coventry, Cecil and York Streets and the St Kilda Railway line in South Melbourne. Since then, the market had become a place where people meet, eat, drink, shop, discover, share and connect.
Just like what people have done every opening day for 150 years, our year 9 students saw the colourful flowers that lighten people’s life, smelled the aroma of freshly baked pastries and heard butchers chatting with customers about the best way to prepare a choice cut of steak. Our students actively participated in market life consuming and looking at the array of goods for sale.
Many of the students tried the famous South Melbourne Market Dim Sims. Other students observed a Spanish chef’s sautéing sliced chicken breast, adding mussels and calamari when making a mouth-watering Paella for customers. Some students visited an Asian grocery stall selling exotic spices.
During the journey, our students discovered the reason the market is supported and valued by the local community is because of the diversity it offers. The market is one reason why people love the uniqueness of South Melbourne, a vivid and inclusive suburb.

SEAL History Class Excursion to NGV
As part of their study of “First Contact”, the Year 9 SEAL History class journeyed into the city to attend the Colony: Frontier Wars Exhibition at NGV’s Ian Potter Gallery.
The exhibition explored Australia’s shared history and featured the works of many Indigenous artists including works by Michael Cook and Maree Clarke. Students observed and engaged with a range of mediums from traditional silver gelatin photography and painting, to large scale sculptural installations and videos. This was a rich experience for students to explore a time period of wondrous discovery and eternal consequence.
When reflecting on the experience one student commented that:
“I found it fascinating how the views of Australian history vary from who is telling the story. Their own individual art adds so much impact to their own stories that it needs no explanation”
Despite intermittent weather, the entire class had a great time I would like to thank them for a wonderful day.

Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) Maths Games
Every year, during term 3, the Maths Association of Victoria holds a inter school maths competition open to all schools in Victoria. It provides an opportunity for students whose area of interest is mathematics and enjoy the challenge of being the first to solve a problem to compete against students with similar abilities from other schools. The competition is based on teamwork , students compete in teams of 4, in three sessions of problem and puzzle solving activities.
Each year level is held at different venues and involves up to 40 to 60 schools. The competition is very challenging and difficult to win as it is well represented by selective entry and private schools who offer academic scholarships. Each school has two teams attending, making up approximately 100 competing groups. Doncaster Secondary College is the only competing school in this area.
