INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Student-led conferences - A success for our International students

Nearly 40 international students’ parents and homestays attended the Doncaster Secondary College student-led conferences this week. It was the first time that our college has provided an outside Chinese interpreter to assist Chinese Speaking parents and homestays to communicate with subject teachers regarding international students’ academic progress, learning strategies and other issues. The feedback I received from these parents and homestays are overwhelmingly positive. They really appreciated the school’s efforts to build the bridge between the Chinese community and Doncaster Secondary College.

During my interviews with these parents and homestays, we discussed student academic progress and attendance, school behaviours, learning strategies, school extra curriculum activities and other school support services. I believe that at the end of the conference day, they all knew the students’ status, what can they do at home to monitor them and who to contact if they are not sure. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to meet them and talk about their children! It was a fruitful day for all of us!

International students

As a member of the international community at Doncaster Secondary College, I have been fortunate enough to be part of the technician team in our College Performance Centre. I am very grateful that I can be directly involved in the school community. I will commence my technician training soon. I am genuinely proud to get involved in the school’s community. There are a substantial number of things international students can get involved in the school community, and I really hope other international students will get more involved in the college community and join some of the groups the College offers to us.

I have chosen to be a member of the school ICT technician team because  I was always interested in how to control the light and the sound audio for the performing stage. My teachers, my parents as well as Ms Huang (International student Coordinator) think this will be a really good opportunity for me to identify where my strengths are and what areas I need to improve. It also provides me with the opportunity to work part-time outside of school hours at the Performance Centre. When I was first told about this opportunity, I was a little unsure whether I would be able to do it. My teachers, Ms Huang and Mr Roche encouraged me so I decided I would give it a try. Part of being in the ICT team involves training and then once you have reached a certain level of knowledge you are able to start working for the Performance Centre. So far, I have really enjoyed the ICT program and I feel that it is a fantastic way to be more involved in our school's community.

DSC Alumni Interview

What was your favourite thing about attending Doncaster Secondary College?

DSC is such a great place to improve and perfect yourself during your junior time. It provides a wide variety of subjects and activities such as sports games, central trip and other camps for students. As an international student, I see DSC as my home here since it has an international department here and every student is supervised by the international teachers which makes me could feel safer and motivated. As a result, who I’ve become and what I’ve achieved is a product of the ethos DSC and its community has fostered within me.
