CERES Community Environment Park

On Monday, 10 September the DSC Green Team went to CERES Community Environment Park with Miss McGuiness and Miss McArthur, to get more of an insight into sustainability. We looked at how what we do affects the environment and we were inspired by the ideas and projects put in place at CERES to help our school be more environmentally friendly and to raise awareness of the current issues we are facing as a nation.

Some of the activities that we participated in on this excursion included: rearranging plastics in order of how long they take to break down and what our phones are made from and how they negatively affect not just the animals, but also the unfair work laws of the people who excavate the minerals used in phones.

We were shown some cool renewable energy sources like a small hydroelectric generator, with just a turn of a tap it produced heaps of energy. They also shared some alarming facts about how sustainable Australia is compared to other countries in the world.

As a nation, we still have many improvements we could make to help reduce our negative impacts on our environment. Individually, we did an activity to represent our carbon footprint, which was broken up into the amount of carbon dioxide that is used to produce the food we eat and electronic and transport habits. This demonstrated how much impact one person can make on the environment. Our trip to CERES was truly eye-opening and as the DSC Green Team, we hope to raise awareness about this issue and inspire other students and teachers at the college to use sustainable alternatives!
