Literacy & Numeracy Week

Helping my child with their reading comprehension

Focus Strategy: Visualising

Confident readers can visualise the details of what they are reading, creating a richer and more detailed understanding of the content. Select a section from the text the student is reading and ask them to describe what they imagine is happening is right now. Ask them:

  • What does the scene/ setting look like? Where are the characters? How are they positioned? What colours are there?
  • What does it feel like? What’s the temperature? How might the characters be feeling?
  • What sounds might be happening right now?
  • What do you think (insert item) might feel like?

NB: Another way of promoting visualising is to ask the student to draw a diagram or picture.

Year 7 Book Swap

As part of our celebration of Literacy and Numeracy week, our Year 7 students were invited to take part in a book swap. Students contributed a preloved book and a gold coin donation and were able to choose a new book to take home. The gold coins were then donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation as part of their Great Book Swap. The Great Book Swap gifts new culturally appropriate books to communities that need them and has supplied over 260,000 books to over 250 remote communities since the beginning of the program.

It was great to see our DSC students engaging in discussions about reading and actively contributing to promoting high literacy across the country. One of my favourite things about a book swap is hearing students share their favourite stories and get inspiration about a new author or a new book from their peers. Thank you to all staff, caregivers and students who were involved.
