MONASH UNIVERSITY BIG DATA CHALLENGE – FRIDAY 22 FEBRUARY

The Big Data Challenge is a one-day workshop run by the Monash University to give secondary school students some insights into what is offered by courses of the business, maths and IT departments. In this newly launched program, students have the opportunity to choose from one of four problem-solving challenges. I participated in the Actuarial Studies challenge, and by the end of the day, I was pleasantly surprised by what a fun and rewarding experience it had been. The day began with an overview of various Monash university courses and ended with ex-students sharing their experiences, which really deepened my understanding of what it is like to study and work in the business, maths or IT sector.

Although requiring some basic mathematical ability, this challenge is suitable for students of all skill levels as long as you are willing to give it a try. Going into the challenge with no knowledge of Actuarial, I still found it easy to collaborate with other participants on the day. It was very nice to meet and connect with many like-minded people, and we worked well together as we progress through the challenge. To anyone interested in participating next year, I strongly encourage you to take this opportunity and opens your mind up to your future pathways, and just enjoy a day of fun activities.
