ANNUAL REPORT PUBLIC MEETING

The Annual Report Public Meeting was held on Tuesday 12 March at the College. We are very pleased to report McKinnon Secondary College continues to build on its strengths in academic performance and student well-being. We are very grateful to the parents who attended this meeting and thank them for their contribution to the college. I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Kan and Mr Long for their efforts in preparing the Annual Report for 2019. The report will be presented to School Council and will then be available on the college website at www.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au

Pi DAY 2019

On Thursday 14 March, McKinnon celebrated Pi Day with the annual Pi Reciting Competition. We had class champions from Mathematics classes battle it out to recite as many decimal places of the irrational number pi as they could to determine overall year level champions.

A special mention to Yonghan Wang (Year 12) who also broke the previous record reciting 605 places of Pi

Our jaw dropping moment of the day was when a Year 9 student, Chris Liolios from Gilmore recited 720 places. This new school record is an unbelievable achievement and will be hard to beat. Well Done Chris!

I thank and congratulate Ms Mauger and Ms Krommydas and the team of teachers who make this possible.

YEAR 7 INFORMATION NIGHT

Thank you to the Year 7 Student Management team (Mrs de Kretser, Ms Sargent, Mr Rood, Mr Farthing, Ms Mellios) for a very successful Year 7 Information evening.

Many parents were in attendance and it starts the very strong partnership that we thrive on. Mrs Wallis and the Peer Support Leaders who have worked tirelessly to assist these students to transition so well into their new school.

The Form Captains were introduced and I congratulate them and wish them well with their first leadership responsibility.

HOUSE MUSIC

What can I say! Congratulations to all the students involved in the House Music competition on Wednesday Night. The musical talent never ceases to amaze me.

As I said on the night, it is the only totally student lead activity and it is a highlight in our calendar.

The Music House Captains were inspiring and the atmosphere electric. Thank you Ms Vrisk for her organization.

Congratulations Monash.  May the music banner of McKinnon continue to fly high.

YEAR 11 FORMAL

Our first ever Year 11 formal was held last night and I congratulate all involved. Once again this was held at Merrimu and the students looked stunning.

I thank the Year 11 student management team (Mr Noble, Ms Jobson, Ms Gambino and Mr Cukierman) for organizing this very successful event.  It is a privilege to see students at a formal setting.

AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHY COMPETITION

I am extremely proud of the achievements of Stefan Simic (Year 12) who has been selected as part of the Australian team at this year's International Geographic Olympiad, to be held in Hong Kong from 30 July to 5 August.

The national team is comprised of just four students from tens of thousands around the country who entered the Australian Geography Competition in 2018. The top sixteen from this competition qualified for Geography's Big Week Out in South Australia, before settling on the final four. To reach this stage is an incredible achievement and testament to Stefan's skills as a geographer, team player and critical thinker. We wish him all the very best in Hong Kong as he flies the flag for McKinnon Secondary College and Australia.

Congratulations Stefan on this marvellous achievement

BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The McKinnon Secondary College volleyball program has started the year with a large amount of success. Three students from the program have been selected for the Victorian Junior Beach volleyball team to complete in the Australian Junior championships in Bunbury, WA. A further two students have been selected in the under 17 Australian Junior team to tour Thailand in Term 2. The first school competition for the year was the Victorian All Schools Beach Volleyball Championships from Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 March. The school was represented by 24 beach volleyball teams in the event. McKinnon Secondary College finished overall as the second best beach volleyball school in Victoria. This result was the best that the program has achieved with 4 Gold and 2 Silver medals in the event.

The McKinnon Volleyball program now turns its attention to indoor volleyball with the Victorian Volleyball League (VVL) that is a 15 round season that starts on Saturday 30 March. We wish the nine teams participating in this event the best of luck.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr De Salvo for his organization of this event and for giving these students an opportunity to shine!

KINGSTON SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Thursday 14 March, over 60 McKinnon students represented the college at the Kingston Swimming championships. Although McKinnon has had lots of success in swimming (7 titles in last 10 years) the team had not won in three years.

Alas, this was our year with the team winning the Junior Girls, Intermediate Boys, Senior Boys, overall Boys and Girls aggregates. Amazing results. A special mention has to go out to the committed senior students who joined relays and sealed the victory.

There were also some outstanding individual performances with the following students winning age group champion awards:

- Ron Golombick (Year 8)

- Mali Romanis (Year 9)

- Summer Partridge (Year 10)

- Will Sharp (Year 11)

Twenty-six students have qualified to swim at the Southern Metro Championships which are held on Thursday 28 March.

ATHLETICS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March Cara Smith (Year 10) took part in the Under 16 State Championship Finals in triple jump, long jump and 100m. She achieved Gold in triple jump and a new state record for this year, Bronze in the long jump and Bronze in the 100m. Well done Cara on your amazing achievements!

FUTSAL COMPETITION

The following Year 8 boys Zareef Zulakarnain, Ryan Bennett, Tomer Niego, Marcus Canadi,  and Elliot Lovell have won a futsal competition. They are named the McKinnon Panthers.

They finished top from 84 teams in First Division.

Congratulations to you all on this wonderful achievement!
