SCIENCE

CHEMISTRY EXCURSION

On Friday 1 March 2019, fifteen Year 12 girls who are currently undertaking Units 3 and 4 Chemistry visited Monash’s Parkville campus, home to the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, for a special day of activities to celebrate women in science for International Women’s Day. We started our day with an inspiring lecture by Professor Michelle McIntosh, who is a pioneer in the field of pharmacology, and currently developing an inhalable drug to treat postpartum haemorrhages.

After that, we were split into groups and went through a rotation of different sessions about medicinal chemistry with female students who study at the campus. We were also able to interact with students from other schools, who shared similar interests, through group activities. We were then treated to an incredible lunch of a variety of Vietnamese food (you don’t get that everyday) and had a Q&A session with current students.

Overall, the experience inspired and empowered us to pursue careers in science. We would like to thank Monash Parkville Campus for hosting this eye-opening event, and our teacher Ms Wallis for coming along with us.
