Resilience Program Launch 2020

Souloung Lee, International Student Program Education Support Officer Reports:

On Wednesday, 19 February the International Student Program officially launched its resilience program for newly arrived international students.

The program is fully-funded by School Focused Youth Service Manningham and is designed to create a sense of connection and cultural care. We have two experienced facilitators delivering weekly sessions in Term 1 and Term 2 to help students adjust to DSC life. Here are some reflections from international students doing the program:

"The Resilience Program is fun because we do lots of activities. I have learnt how to calm myself down and reduce stress. I enjoy listening to music with my eyes closes which makes me feel relaxed. Of course, the best part of the program is the food! In my opinion, this program teaches me how to manage my mind and not overthink things."

By Siew Ling (Chris) N, Year 10

"The Resilience Program is wonderful because we get the chance to talk with other international students about our lives in Melbourne. There are two experts who really understand our circumstances and help us manage our emotions."

By Tien Hieu (Harry) B, Year 11

"In the Resilience Program, we introduce ourselves to one another which is a good way for us to make friends. Teachers also play music to teach us how to relax, and we share different food.  The teacher talks about many interesting topics such as Australian culture, food and schooling. I enjoy the Resilience Program not only because it builds our confidence, but it also allows us to share information. We can talk about our own stresses and get to know more about each other. "

By Yingxian (Chloe) W, Year 10

"I am really enjoying this program! I have tested many kinds of chips and cheeses. My favourite part is "break time" which is very helpful. My communication skills have improved dramatically."

Year 8 Student Joins DSC

Basketball Team!

Gia T is a newly arrived international student from Vietnam. As a passionate basketball player, he participated in the Boys/Mixed Basketball team tryout and was successfully selected into the team.

Although he’s the only international student in this team, he felt included and welcomed by his team mates. Here is Gia's reflection of his first inter-school match:

What position did you play?

I didn’t have a specific position but mainly played point guard.

How do you feel about the match and what did you learn from it?

The match was different from any games I have played in Vietnam. Everything is fast, definitive and tough. I found that other players are thinner and faster than me, so I will do more exercise and running to improve my speed/strength.

Who is your basketball icon? Why do you like basketball?

LeBron James is my idol and I want to play like him one day. I love basketball because it’s my dream sport and I can play all day without rest. Back in Vietnam, my sleeping time was always less than my training time.

Egyptian Adventures!

International student Jeffrey S from Hong Kong, not only enjoys DSC school life, but also likes to broaden his horizons by travelling overseas. Here is his reflection of his recent trip to Egypt.

From 24 December 2019 to 1 January 2020, I travelled to Egypt with my family. My adventure began in Aswan, south of Egypt. In Aswan, I visited a big temple called Abu-Simbel.

After that, we went on a cruise down the Nile River. We docked at places so that we could visit temples and markets. We then visited the Red Sea, and travelled into the desert by camel to visit people who lived there and learn about their culture.

Our next destination was Cairo, north of Egypt where we admired the pyramids. I went inside one of them, but there was not much to see as most of the things are in the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities or in the British Museum. However, it was still exciting to going inside a pyramid. My adventure finished with a visit to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities.
