MySelf Program

Discovering Redwood Forest - Student Reflection
Our Year 9 MyOutdoors students had an amazing day exploring Redwood Forest on Wednesday, 26 March.
Reflection by Sonia P (9A):
On Wednesday, 26 February we took an excursion to Redwood Forest. The focus of this trip was to experience nature, learn about the recreational areas of rivers/bays and to appreciate Australia’s greenery.
We were driven by Ms Chiuchiarelli on a private bus. On the way we saw lots of beautiful scenery. Halfway through the journey we stopped at a local bakery and bought some yummy food.
Once we arrived at the forest it was really cold and pouring with rain. Ms Chiuchiarelli then instructed us to enter the forest one by one, being completely silent. At first the forest looked dark and muggy, but once we entered we saw huge, tall trees all lined up together. It had hints of green and bright beams of light that were shining through the branches. We also saw thousands of bats flying above the trees, making loud screeching noises.
We walked along a path near a creek and observed the many trees and bushes. We also learnt a bit about the Yarra. Overall it was a very exciting excursion with many beautiful sights. Thank you to Ms Chiuchiarelli for organising the trip and we strongly recommend it to anyone considering going.
Rock Climbing Excursion
Reflection by Sienna S (9F), Lily P (9D) and Harrison M (9I)
On Wednesday, 4 March the MyOutdoors class went to Hardrock in Nunawading to go rock climbing. The focus of the excursion was to improve teamwork, coordination, communication, confidence and build trust. The staff gave us some training before we had our climb, demonstrating what we needed to do and offering safety advice.
It was a great day climbing walls, gaining new skills and overcoming our fear of heights!
We're Going to the Zoo!
On Wednesday, 19 February one of the MyCity classes went to Melbourne Zoo for their first excursion.
The students decided which excursions they wanted to go on, and each group was responsible for organising one of the excursions.
The first group did a great job working as a team to organise the public transport and planning the day. We got on a very packed bus to go to the city and then we caught a tram to the zoo. The weather started off with some brief showers, however by the time we arrived, the sun was shining on the animals and us.
Students saw many animals and exhibits, with one of the highlights being the butterfly enclosure. They walked around with their old and new friends in the MyCity class. The MySelf program allows students the opportunity to make new friends.
Students were a little nervous on their first excursion, however they slowly built their confidence navigating their way in an unfamiliar environment.
Well done to the organising group who led the first great excursion of the year. We look forward to the other groups stepping up and leading us on our other city experiences.
