State Library of Victoria (SLV)

In the first week of this Term Year 7 students at Kings Park attended an excursion at the State Library of Victoria (SLV) to develop their research skills and explore this free public resource. Before enjoying lunch on the Swanston Street lawns, students crept silently through the magnificent domed reading room, and climbed the stairs to see Ned Kelly's pistol and armour perfectly preserved. Students created their own video productions based on a topic of their own interest, answering a range of different questions about people from Melbourne's diverse history.

Student Personal Achievements

Lauchlan (Locky) Henderson is a Year 7 student who has recently been to Sydney to compete in the Worlds Title for Karate. Unfortunately Locky missed out on the title by 1 point, but he has shown great commitment and reaped the rewards of  his persistence and determination to achieve.

As well as training two nights a week with the Seniors he teaches juniors four nights a week.

Congratulations Locky on your accomplishment and watch out World Titles next year for this daring young man.

We have had many successes this year and the various academic institutions seem to appreciate our students and offer our college many exciting programs throughout the year. In brief, RMIT hosted a group of our girls for their “Women in Construction” day, as well as their very popular “I Belong in Crime and Justice” taster offered at their Swanston Street Campus.

Deakin University’s Geelong Campus hosted 18 of our year 10 students during their Engineering and Science Day. Kangan Batman Institute invited our interested students to their Moonee Ponds, Richmond, Broadmeadows and Dockland Campuses on various days where our students learnt about their many trades and other courses on offer. We also visited the Sunshine hospital through our connection with the “LEAP” Program and learnt all about the many different areas in the health industry.

Reading Challenge Pizza Party

The 2017 Premier's Reading Challenge started at the beginning of March and ended in September. To complete the challenge we were expected to read fifteen books, specifically novels. The instructions were to read five books of your choice and ten books from the challenge list.

The Challenge finished on September 1.  The people who completed the reading challenge were awarded with a pizza party which included various rewards and shows bags. We also were rewarded certificates from the Premier Daniel Andrews.

At the Pizza Party, there was an award presentation for all the fantastic book lovers who completed the reading challenge. Congratulations to Cindy  from Year 9, and Jessica from Year 8 who were the lucky winners of a $100 JB-HiFi gift voucher.

A big thank you to Mrs Papadopoulos and Mrs James for organising this wonderful event and all the other literacy teachers who helped and attended the Pizza Party making it a wonderful experience for all enthusiastic readers there.

Thank you Copperfield College.

Year 9 and 10 Exams

It is hard to believe that we have already completed three weeks of Term Four. In three short weeks, the Year 10 students will be commencing their end of year examinations. Students should now be working on creating summaries for each of their subjects and asking their teachers for examination outlines and practice examinations. Students will be receiving the examination timetable this week. Year 9 students still have five weeks until their examinations begin, but for them as well, now is the time to be summarising their notes and preparing their examination study timetable to ensure they get the best possible result they can.

Year 10 to Year 11 Transition

From Monday 4 December until Friday 8 December, the Year 10 students will be spending the week at Delahey, attending classes and getting ready for the beginning of their next journey in VCE or VCAL. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all to the Year 10 students for their time at Kings Park over the past four years. We wish you every success with the next phase of your education journey and look forward to hearing of your accomplishments at Delahey.

Lateness

A key focus this term is on improving the punctuality of students to class. It is important that the students are responsible for their timely arrival to class. Some students have had to make up for these repeated late arrivals to class during lunchtime detentions. Students are encouraged to have greater respect for themselves as well as their teachers and classmates and arrive to class on time.

Year 10 Formal

The Year 10 Formal preparations are almost complete. Staff are looking forward to celebrating the end of the students four year journey at Kings Park with them. Students are encouraged to return their permission for and the money to the office as soon as possible to ensure their spot at the formal.

Year 10 Tasmania Camp

The Year 10 Tasmania Camp was a great success. Students enjoyed experiencing the wonderful sights and delights of Tasmania. The visit to MONA was certainly an eye opener with some amazing contemporary exhibitions experienced by all. Some of the students even had the opportunity to try their talents at art themselves by drawing an abstract piece of artwork through the use or mirrors. The Tahune AirWalk saw the students walking 50m above the forest floor on a raised walkway. The views out over the Huon River and Valley were breathtaking. For some, the challenge was difficult due to a fear of heights, but for others, they enjoyed the swaying of the walkways as we walked along the paths.

Port Arthur certainly helped us to understand the poor conditions that the convicts had to endure in the early days of settlement. Hearing of some of the crimes of the convicts that saw them shipped to the other side of the world was interesting. We experienced some wild Tasmanian weather whilst at Port Arthur and were court out in the open during a hail storm.  But within ten minutes the sun was out and drying us off. Certainly the highlight of our time at Port Arthur was the Ghost tour. Our guide had us all hanging off every word that he was saying. There were screams and gasps throughout the tour, and anyone going should certainly stay for the ghost tour.

Wednesday saw us leave Hobart and make our way to Davenport to catch the Spirit of Tasmania back home. We had a few hours to spend in Launceston. The highlight being a visit to Cataract Gorge. Many students took the opportunity to ride on one of the longest chairlifts in the world. It was a ride across the gorge and over a basin of water filled by the South Esk River. Other students went for a 50 minute hike to check out the view of the South Esk River Gorge. It was a slightly strenuous walk with a mix of King Park and Sydenham students.

The ferry ride back to Victoria was a relatively calm voyage. Only a couple of our students felt sick, but it was lovely to see the sunrise over the skyscrapers of Melbourne knowing that we were back home.

Ms. Geyer, Ms. Dedes and Mr. Rankin would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our students who came on the camp. You were fine representatives of the school and your families. The guide at Port Arthur commented that you were one of the best three groups he had ever had the pleasure to give a tour to. You made us proud and we were honoured to have shared this experience with you.

Finally

We would like to wish all of the Year 9 and 10 students well on your upcoming examinations. May you get the results that you deserve. The more effort you put in now, the greater your results will be.
