Clever Design

Year 5 students built robots using Lego in Design Technology. Natalie and Eliza explain:

During the year, the 5’s got the chance to do Design Technology. We got to build bridges using unusual materials, such as spaghetti. We also got to use the NXT LEGO Robotics sets and got to program them aswell.

When we first got our materials, we had to plan out what we were going to build and create. At the start we got put into groups and started to plan. It wasn’t until week 3 of the term when we started building, which was good because if we didn’t plan that long our bridges wouldn’t have turned out as good as it did. When it got to judging some people weren’t finished, but still got judged anyway. The way we got judged is, a 50 gram weight was placed on our creation and another one was added each minute until it broke.

This term (term 4) we got to play around with the NXT LEGO robotics sets. We got put into groups and everyone was included and had a job. Each person got to have a shot to collect LEGO pieces for our robots or follow the instructions to build a perfect robot to program and play around with them. We had instructions on showbie that showed us how to build the robots step by step. After we built our robots we had to program them to start on a X then go straight forward then orbit around a square and return back to the X. H

This year, we have had a lot of fun during the terms of design tech we have learnt a lot of new things. We hope to experience this next year.
