Handy Work

Auslan Club was a hit on the Early Years Campus this year.  Some students have reflected on their time at Auslan Club:

On Early Years the Auslan club has continued to work hard, they have been learning the school song and have been mentoring the Prep and Year 1 students with their Auslan. Here are some of the things they have enjoyed the most about Auslan club:

My favourite part was when we got to teach the preps Auslan. Zara 3D.

I liked performing in front of the Early Years Campus and being a good leader which is one of our values. It has always been nice teaching the preps the National Anthem in Auslan and our School song Dream Home. Mia 4D.

My favourite part of Auslan club was teaching the preps and doing Auslan at Assembly. Dereon 4A

My favourite part of Auslan was doing the hand signs for Dream Home and the Australian Anthem. By 3D

I loved teaching the preps, doing the Australian Anthem and LOVED doing our school song Dream Home. Olivia 3D

My favourite thing about Auslan Club was learning how to do Dream Home and listening to the music to know what actions to do. Ben 3C

Plenty of learning has happened on the Middle Years Campus with Auslan. Eliza and Sara explain:

This year, the Year 5 and 6’s got the chance to do Auslan (L.O.T.E) once a week, all year long. Auslan is a way to speak to Deaf people around Australia. Auslan has been used since the 1980s and is still going on till this day onwards. We participated in lots of different activities such as, ‘What Does Language Mean To Me’, ‘Big D, little d’, ‘Deaf Ideology’, ‘Historical Deaf Figure’ and we had Deaf awareness week during Term 4. Let’s not forget the Auslan games. Guess who? Pictionary, knots and crosses and Chinese whispers Auslan.

Deaf Awareness Week

Deaf Awareness Week ( International Week Of The Deaf ) is a week to support the Deaf community. We respect this week and we highlight all the issues Deaf people are having.  We try are best to be there to support them in their life journey. As a sign of respect we have the opportunity to purchase a $2 butterfly since butterflies are Deaf and they see the symbol for Deaf Awareness.  Deaf Awareness Week officially began in 1958 and is still going on to this day forwards.

The Magic Flute

The Magic Flute is a performance with interpreters and we got to watch it. The Magic Flute was performed by Opera Australia and Auslan interpreters. It was an incursion and was hosted inside the Middle Year’s Gym. The year 5’s and 6’s learnt some new signs and also got to interact with the performance. In the performance, the prince (protagonist) was on a journey to find true love, he was brought into the ‘witches’ house and was given a quest to find her daughter. He received a necklace and instantly fell in love with the princess ( main character). It was an enjoyable performance.

Year 1 Bingo

During Term 4, 5C got to go down to Early Years to play Auslan Bingo. At first we had to teach them numbers in Auslan. The group were 3 year 1’s to 1 year 5. We played 2 games of bingo and the winners for the second round was Sara (Year 5) and Ella, Elana and Bonnie (Year 1’s)

In conclusion, Auslan has been a great opportunity for year 5’s and 6’s. Many year 5’s can’t wait for next year to enjoy some fun activities while learning. Our work for the first 3 terms was displayed In the Year 8 glassed area, during the domain expo people came to the Year 8 glassed pod and learned a lot about Auslan and the Deaf community. They learned Auslan signs such as different colours, difference between the north and south signs of Australia. Just before the expo ended, we quickly explained the difference between American Sign Language (A.S.L.) and Australian Sign Language (Auslan).
