Learning – Powered by sleep
Suppose you have had a day at school with a lot of information to take in? You want to retain it and be as well prepared as you can for learning. How do you ensure that you do it well? A team of research psychologists at Harvard Medical School would encourage you to sleep on it.
Several research teams have found that sleep strengthens learning and it can help you to remember facts. The Harvard researchers have also discovered that a good night’s sleep can enhance movement skills, things like playing a piece of music, riding a bike, or throwing a ball the way you want.
“But remembering lots of facts is not the only or even the main function of memory,” says Walker, a sleep expert who works at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. “The key to solving problems and generating new ideas involves how those facts are put together into a bigger picture, one we’ve not seen before.”
The subjects in one study were told they would be tested on their memory of the individual items in a memory test at a later time. Then they separated into three groups, one was tested after 20 minutes, the second after 12 hours, and the third had 24 hours to mull the patterns and their relationships. Half of those in the 12-hour group slept before the test, the other half did not. Their study demonstrated that those who got a good night’s sleep performed best, and those in the 20-minute group did the worst.
The research team has indicated that sleep may play a part in the active engagement of the cognitive processing of our memories, and that knowledge appears to expand both over time and with sleep.
If so, then ‘sleeping on it’ as opposed to trying to cram information the night before a test or exam is a wise approach, although this does require commitment, preparation and organisation. The second part of this challenge then becomes working out ‘how’ and ‘when’ are the best times for study and revision, in order to be able to put your head on the pillow earlier.
