What's happening in our Learning Communities - Year 3 and 4

Year 3 and 4 Learning Community

The Year 3 and 4 Community are starting a new topic in Maths focusing on Volume and Capacity. This week they are learning more about Capacity. The Victorian Curriculum defines Capacity as: ‘Capacity is a term used to describe how much a container will hold.’

Their task on Monday was to estimate the capacity of containers. Initially, they are looking at how many Unifix blocks containers of different sizes will hold. They needed to look at the container and make an estimate of its capacity. Once they had estimated, they needed to then fill the container with the blocks. Dion found that his estimate was much lower than the actual capacity of the container. Keagan’s estimate was closer to the eventual capacity of the container.

Next up, they will be measuring using liquids and litres and millilitres. They will be focusing on how they can be more accurate in their estimations and the tools we use to measure capacity.
