Junior Sport

Although it has been a topsy-turvy year in terms of sports and carnivals, we have managed to get some rosters and carnivals up and running.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all parents and friends of our students who have been involved in either the running of our swimming and athletics carnivals or the sports rosters that we have been able to offer. Your continued commitment is invaluable.

Southern Primary Basketball Championships

Recently, the annual Southern Primary Basketball Championships were held at Kingborough, Moonah and Clarence Sports Centres over the weekend. Two Year 5/6 teams represented the College.

Our Year 5/6 Division 2 team unfortunately didn’t get a win during the tournament, however, they played to the best of their abilities and represented the school with great pride, despite being very disheartened. Regardless of the outcome of each game, the girls perfectly displayed our four R’s which is something that we are most proud of. Well done, girls!

A big thank you to Janelle Pritchard who coached the team throughout the tournament. I cannot thank Janelle enough for always helping out with teams and carnivals, it is greatly appreciated.

Our Year 5/6 Division 1 team were faced with very strong competition and unfortunately remained winless on day one. Day two, however, was a brand new day and the team certainly kept their best to last and played a fabulous game which resulted in finishing third place overall. Congratulations to the team for a wonderful tournament.

Natalie Geard once again brought her basketball expertise to coaching the girls. Thank you to Nat for being a brilliant mentor and coach. Nat’s insight and approach to the game is invaluable to our students and I know each girl has gained vital skills and knowledge directly from Nat’s tutorage.

St Mary’s College Junior Athletics Team

Given the restrictions we have all faced this year, we are very fortunate to have been able to participate in both the Southern Tasmanian Catholic Primary School Sports Association (STCPSSA) and the Junior Southern Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (JSSATIS) interschool carnivals. The carnivals were the first (and last) that we were able to participate in this year!

The STCPSSA carnival was held on Friday 6 November and the JSSATIS on Thursday 12 November. Both days were met with challenging weather conditions, however this did not sway the performances of our athletes.

Both Kate Jordan and I are always proud of the conduct of all our athletes and this year was no exception. Each interschool carnival is marked with a tinge of sadness as it is the last carnival for our Year 6 athletes, however, we also welcome our Year 3 athletes as they embark on the first of future carnivals in years to come.

Congratulations to all our athletes and thank you for representing the College in such a wonderful manner.
