Well Being

Our New Playground

WELLBEING AT MPS AS REPORTED BY OUR STUDENTS

Settling back to school has brought  new challenges, excitement and a busy time for students and teachers.  Even though students have only been back at school for a short period of time, Murrumbeena Primary has begun different  well-being programs which have enhanced, inspired and taught students from all year levels many concepts. These are just some of the things that students have completed within and throughout the starting weeks of term four:

Student Representative Council (SRC) Peer Mediation, PLAY training, virtual incursions and new programs.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Representing, helping, leading and growing.

As the sun beams glistened down to the green grass of the ‘quiet area,’ SRC reps began to show up from different classes, ready to learn, lead and create change. Student representative council is a group of students from grades one to six who represent their classes and create change and action across our school. SRC representatives met face to face on the 22 October with the school captains. At this meeting, all student representative council members and school captains discussed many important topics including outside play, new equipment for the school, peer mediation, school values and stickers and sports equipment. Using the feedback from other students and classes, the SRC, teachers and school captains will look at creating  future change in our school. With student representative council up and running there are so many tasks for the SRC reps to complete in the upcoming weeks of term 4!

PEER MEDIATION

Leading, solving, understanding and assisting. Peer mediation is an important leadership skill and opportunity for all year 5 students of Murrumbeena Primary. Peer mediation is when year 5 students assist children at play time with issues they have, showcasing their leadership skills. This year peer meditators also have the responsibility of handing out stickers for all students showing our four school values at recess and lunch times. This helps to encourage and reflect our important values across the school. Throughout the past two weeks, the year 5 students have been learning and training to be responsible peer mediators and have completed tasks to understand body language, the meaning of peer mediation and our four school values, the importance of problem solving along with so much more. With these skills, these students are able to be leaders of our school and learn important life skills for the future!

MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING

Skills, defence, training and control.

These are just some of the many skills that the year 6 students who are completing the MAT program have learnt and built knowledge about. The MAT program involves selected year six students learning and training in martial arts. Every Wednesday for one hour, year 6 students learn martial arts with a special guest who teaches and explains about defence, self control and techniques including front kicks, roundhouse kicks, back kicks and many more. These different skills are vital for students who are passionate about martial arts but are also willing to create a path for developing skills such as managing challenges, self control techniques and finding and enhancing personal strengths: all being very important for our future.

YEAR 6 INCURSION FOR EXHIBITION

Year 6 Exhibition.

Exhibition has been a new concept for year 6s this year but has also been a topic that they have greatly understood and learnt about in the last few weeks. Exhibition is an opportunity for year six students to exhibit the attributes of the IB Learner Profiles, which they have been developing over primary school years. Through exhibition, students will engage their audience by presenting a chosen problem of interest to the school community. On the 20th of October all year six students had an incursion on taking action for their exhibition topic run by Megan O’Malley. Megan was a performer who loved shopping for clothing however after seeing the truth about where her clothes have come from and how they were made she began to take action. Creating a campaign she decided to walk on foot all around Asia (Vietnam) creating interviews and YouTube videos of people who made clothing  along  her journey.

After listening to Megan’s story we completed 3 different tasks which were important steps in taking action for exhibition. The first task was creating a vision board of the future of the world in relation to our problem we chose for exhibition. The next task we completed was undertaking change maker tools which were tools that we could use to create action. Finally we planned an action task to complete for our exhibition topic.

The incursion was of great assistance to the Year 6 students. It was not only informative but inspired so many students of year six to create change and try their best no matter what.

So far, term four has been amazing for all students. With face to face learning, exhibition, peer mediation, incursions, new programs and so much coming this term it's certainly going to be a jam packed one with so much to do for every student and teacher.  I can not wait for the rest of the year and all the obstacles, tasks and events Murrumbeena Primary will have to overcome and complete!
