Year 4 Bike Ed

Year 4 Bike Ed Cancelled

Unfortunately, the Year 4 Bike Ed program has been cancelled for this year.

It is still important for families (with children of any age) to discuss road rules and help their children become more aware of the dangers that they may face on the roads whilst riding their bikes.

It is also a good idea to ensure that your child’s bike and helmet is still safe and road worthy.

Some ideas to discuss and practise with your child are as follows;

  • how to leave the curb and enter the street
  • using the gears on the bike
  • braking at high and low speeds
  • precision riding – riding in a straight line, riding around obstacles,
  • performing a U-turn
  • how to pass a parked car – what to look for
  • ride with one hand in order to scan over shoulder for any dangers
  • hand signals to indicate which direction the rider is turning
  • how to negotiate a round-a-bout correctly
  • bike maintenance
  • road rules – what various road signs mean, road etiquette

ACTIVITIES TO SHARE WITH YOUR CHILD:

  • Help your child to select the correct size helmet and make sure it is properly fitted.
  • Take your child along cycling paths and stop to discuss potential hazards along the way.
  • Count the number of driveways, laneways or places where the path crosses the road.
  • Cycle together until you are confident your child is safe on the roads.
  • Ride to school together, we have a secure bike shelter.
  • Obtain a copy of the road rules and have a Family Quiz
  • Protect your feet when you ride- don’t go barefoot or wear thongs or sandals.
  • SAFETY HINTS:
  • It is the law to wear a certified Australian Standards helmet when riding.
  • Protect your feet when you ride- don’t go barefoot or wear thongs or sandals.
