From the Acting Principal

Ross Pritchard

Welcome to August

Where does the time go?  Taking time to be in the moment and acknowledging the ‘now’ allows us to connect with people around us and the events that fill our busy days.  During the last year it has been challenging to treat each day as it comes.  Thoughts are often dominated by reflections of the past, or looking way ahead in the future.  Human nature also often gravitates to what’s wrong rather than the things that we can do now to be happier, more connected and focused on the things that really count.  Time flies and with the constant disruptions to our lives, I encourage everyone this week to try and take ten deep breaths and be aware of the ‘now’.

At the time of writing the Year 8 students and 14 Auburn High staff have departed for a three-day camp in Alexandra (Yarra Valley).  The students are excited and happy to be going on their first camp in a couple of years.  They will find new friends, strengthen existing friendships, try new activities and connect with the natural elements.  School camps are memorable times and best wishes to all those attending.  I thank Ms Munro for her amazing organisational skills and leadership of this intrepid group of students and staff.  I am grateful to the families and partners of staff for making their attendance possible.  I hope parents get to enjoy a quieter household for three days.  Take a moment to rest.

Planning for the International Baccalaureate 2023 is underway.  Eleven staff members are completing their first round of professional training courses during August.  Ms Francis, Mr Smith, Mr Felbel, Mr Wu, Ms Phillipson, Ms Price, Ms Gibson, Ms Mahony, Ms Wong and Mr Patrick are all working hard on this project. The knowledge and skills from this training will facilitate further planning and curriculum development.

An online parent forum focused on Auburn High Learner Qualities (ALQ’s) will be held next Tuesday, August 10th.  Following a brief summary of the School’s Annual Report, parents will get the opportunity to contribute to the introduction of the ALQ’s.  Feedback is being sought in relation to how we can incorporate:  creativity, collaboration, citizenship, communication, critical thinking and character; in Years 7 to 12.  Formal invitations and agendas will be delivered via email.

I am grateful for our professional staff, hard working students and supportive parents.  Thank you for continuing to ‘ride the bumps with a grin’ and ensuring that Auburn High continues to provide a high-quality education for all its students.
