Icarus Community Report

Issue 11

The grade 5/6 Icarus teachers remain so proud of the resilience shown by our grade 5 and 6 students in adapting again to online learning. They continue to be great role models for the rest of our school community and for younger siblings who are also learning remotely.  We greatly appreciate the support and teamwork shown by parents and guardians for keeping students on track with learning at home.

Numeracy

One of our numeracy tasks asked students to design a school flag. The requirements asked for the flag to be 1/2 white, 1/4 light green and 1/4 orange. This was a real test of whether students knew their fractions. Have a look at some of the fraction flags students produced. We think they met this challenge really well!

We have also started looking at decimals and percentages. Look at the different ways we can represented a value: as a fraction, percentage, decimal and as a picture!

Reading

We are retelling our favourite stories by acting them out on video.

Some of us went to the next level and taught our pets to act!

Writing

We have been practising writing Information Reports over the past few weeks. A good Information Report is well organised using subheadings. Students wrote Information Reports on the recent Olympics, as well as Space (which relates to our Inquiry focus). Once students got the hang of the format, they had a go at selecting their own topics to research and write about. We also focused on paraphrasing to ensure information is put in our own words so we do not plagiarise.

5/6 classes have been coming up with interesting ways to keep up morale and make learning fun. Some students helped creating a classroom joke book and others sometimes share memes and jokes. We hope you like this joke.

A big shout out to our students for their hard work. The quality of many students' online learning is impressive.

Please ensure you are monitoring Compass notifications so you are aware of important announcements. We congratulate 5/6 students on their efforts this term and look forward to another term filled with exciting learning in Term 4!

Kind regards,

5/6 Icarus teachers,

Lisa, Paul, Amber and Ainsley
