Year 6

Wellbeing Day

On Friday the 3rd of September, Year 6 decided to switch roles a little with Miss Black and run the day. Each leadership group had time over the week to meet and came up with a fun and interactive activity to run with the whole group. We enjoyed Kahoots, baking brownies, yoga and Scrible.IO.  We thank our parents immensely for helping us get all the ingredients and equipment together.  It was so fun just to have our microphones on, talking about random facts, memories and stories. One that came to mind was the last baking experience some of us had last year in Miss Black’s math group where some of the Year 6 students put onions in their brownies and tricked Mr Flanagan into eating them. We look forward to being back in the classroom together, however, what a nice rest bite our well-being day was, especially because it was pouring outside.

Year 3/4C

As part of our shared stories topic on ‘Happiness’, the students were asked to create a writing piece on what happiness means to them including moments, memories or goals they have for the future. Here are some samples of what the students created.

During remote learning, some of our students have been working from school. Whilst at school, some students were inspired by the Heritage garden and wanted to share an article about it’s features and purpose.

Year 3/4CJ

In 3/4CJ we have been exploring what happiness is.  How would you explain it to an alien?

Jelly Bean Joy    by Zara

Bang! There was a big cloud of smoke on the asphalt. Tiny voices started yelling in the distance. I decided to see where the noise was coming from. When I got to the asphalt, with the blink of an eye the smoke disappeared. Tiny creatures started to gather around. I was so excited that a smile sprang up on my face. I asked, “Who are you?” “We’re jelly bean aliens”, they replied. Suddenly they all started pointing at my face. “What’s that?” murmured the jelly bean alien. “It’s a smile” I answered. “What’s a smile?”, asked the Jelly bean alien. “Have you never heard of a smile? A smile is to show happiness.” I cheered. “What’s happiness?” questioned the alien. “Happiness…hmm…oh what do you like?” I quizzed. “Um…unicorns but I’m meant to like rotten cheese.” Whispered the little baby alien. “What do you like about unicorns?” I asked. “Their beautiful metallic horns.” She replied. “That’s what is happiness to you, the little flame that starts in your heart that makes you feel warm and toasty.” I said. “I get it now”, replied the little baby alien and a huge smile sprung up on their face. “Do you want to go and play on the playground?” I asked. “What’s a playground?”  “You have a lot to learn, my new little friend.” “Do you want to eat some jojoby?” “What’s that?” I said, “I have a lot to learn as well.”

During Science Week, children had an opportunity to complete some experiments.  Sebastian tested the development of mold from various germs on bread with some excellent results!

Prep

The Preps tried all week to guess Ms Tierney’s baby's name; and you wouldn’t believe it !! They finally figured it out.

The clues were

  • It has five letters
  • It has the letter ‘r’ within the name
  • Can you figure it out?

Advice for Ms Tierney on how to look after baby Oscar - She needs all the help she can get; and the Preppies were only too happy to shower her with their wisdom of child rearing.

In Juniors, we have been learning about resilience and how to become a learner who does not give up when a challenge presents itself. We created our very own ‘learning Pits’ to remind us of the different strategies that we can use when we feel we are stuck  on a problem that we cannot figure out just yet.

In Juniors we have been writing different types of poems to show off our many talents and creative sparks. Be prepared for your mind to be blown with some of our amazing poetry.

Transdev School Bus Safety Poster Competition

Do you know a wee Warhol, a compact Cezanne or a petite Picasso? Transdev are calling all Victorian primary school students to create a poster about bus safety for their chance to win some fantastic prizes!

This poster competition is a great opportunity for Prep to Year 6 students to engage with and learn about safe travel on and around buses, and to employ analytical and creative skills to develop a poster promoting bus safety.

Teaching students about travelling safely on the bus network helps build confidence when travelling and prepare them to travel independently to and from school.  Safety is a priority and they are committed to educating students about safe behaviours on buses and spreading the message that bus safety is everybody’s responsibility.

The bus safety poster competition opens on Monday 26 July and closes midnight Sunday 19 September.  Prizes include games, book vouchers and arts packs. Prizes will be awarded in three categories : Prep – Year 2, Years 3 - 4 and Years 5 - 6.  A special prize called the “Journey Makers’ Choice Award” chosen by popular vote of Transdev Melbourne staff will also be awarded in each category and a prize awarded to the school with the most student entries. Winners will be announced in early October.

For more information and to submit their entry, students can visit https://transdevmelbourne.com.au/poster-competition/.
