Exploring Maths through Problem Solving

The Year 3 to 6 students at St Anthony’s school are taking part in the The Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads programs throughout the year. The programs are unique in that they focus on the students’ ability to solve mathematical problems in a creative manner – as opposed to simply reaching a solution using a particular method.

The students took part in the first session last week, with the Year 3/4 students working in groups to solve their problems, and the Year 5/6 students working independently. Our students stepped up to the challenge and kept a growth mindset while attempting to solve each challenging problem.

Maths at Home

Research shows that parents and guardians play a vital role in supporting their child's learning, development, health, safety and wellbeing. You play a key role in helping your child succeed. When it comes to Mathematics, children need lots of experiences in making, counting, drawing and talking about numbers. You may feel that the Maths your child is doing is different to the way you were taught. However, you can still help support your child in many ways - including showing enthusiasm towards Maths, making connections by explaining how key skills connect, or discussing specific language skills related to Maths

As we head into the school holidays, you can take advantage of this time together to connect with your child and their Maths learning through everyday activities like play, cooking and shopping.

This website has some great ideas for ways you can support your child's Maths education at home.
