Chaplain's Message
Do not ask your children to strive
'Do not ask your children to strive'
by William Martin
Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.
It is so important to be able to focus in on that which is around us in our own world right now.
Although we are called to pray for the situations that are flooding our news, we also need the wisdom to share with our own children how to be the best they can be, how to deal with the difficult, how to keep sight of the wonder and beauty of their world.
Lord have mercy and give us infinite wisdom, give us courage to stand for justice and give us peace that we may seek your face!
