Teaching and Learning

Young Leaders Conference

On Monday our two year six students travelled to Melbourne to participate in the National Young Leaders Event, they were joined by over 5000 other student leaders. The day saw them leave very early on the train to Southern Cross and take their first Melbourne tram ride to the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. There were four guest speakers who each spoke about their journey in life to become who they are today; the speakers were Candy Hertz, Nazeem Hussain, Amanda Johnstone and Robetr Dipierdomenico (feel free to Google their amazing life stories). The students were also entertained by DJ Raf and a dance duo that had them singing and grooving in the aisles! It was a long but very worthwhile day and certainly something we will look to do with our student leaders again in future years.

The trip also gave our two Year Six students the chance to wear their new tops for the first time and despite the cold Melbourne weather, they were happy to show them off.

Year 3-6 News from Mr Collins

Health Diary

In conjunction with our Healthy Lifestyle unit we are studying in the Senior room, all students have been instructed to complete their own health diary. These diaries as the students to take notes on their food and drink intake each day, along with the exercise they participate in. The diaries last 2 weeks and will be studied at school. The idea of diary is to use them to help the students recognise small changes they could make that would improve their overall wellbeing. Please assist me by reminding the kids to complete their diaries when at home. Mr Collins.

P-2 News from Mrs Lightburn

Well the term is nearly finished and we have all been working really hard.

In Maths we have finished addition and subtraction and the children have shown great progress especially when adding 2 single digit numbers together, doubles and adding to 10. We have had some fun with time over the last 2 weeks covering o’clock, half-past and converting these to digital time. It would be great if they could practice these at home for reinforcement.

In our Literacy sessions we have been writing narratives, concentrating on getting our ideas written down and developing a character and setting to base our story on.

In our Integrated Studies we have spent the term learning about how to stay healthy at home and school. The children will be bringing home their work to show you next week so I hope you enjoy reading all about it. We are doing Easter tasks for the last 2 weeks with some extra surprises for everyone.

I hope everyone has a great holiday break and we will see all your smiling faces in Term 2.

ART

The students have been busy in art over the last couple of weeks. We have learned about colour theory and been busy mixing our own colours using only the three primary colours of red, blue and yellow. Whilst the senior students then used these colours to create a scene with their colour variations surrounding a tree, the younger students finger painted rainbows.

Students also have been busy using oil pastels in a variety of ways and created what we affectionately like to call- Smudge Birds.

Outdoor Education

This term we have been learning about Bees. The students made some bees using recycled materials and have now hung them around the school. We had a lot of fun making these and also learning all about the importance of bees to our existence.

Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships

This term we have focussed on learning about emotions; how to recognise them and how to react appropriately when we are experiencing them. We have talked about emotions being expressed as colours and the students were asked to create their own Emotions Chart called, " What colour am I today?". Below are some of the very creative examples.

MARC Library with Mrs Gentry

Happy Holidaysto everyone!

In the last MARC session of Term 1 we will be sharing the recently launched Dragon Dance by local Bendigo author Lauren Mitchell and illustrator Geoff Hocking.

This is a story of the 3 years that the Chinese Dragons couldn’t be part of the Easter celebrations. How fabulous that we have a book written about our local experience of Covid (and then the weather!)

If you would like your own copy of Dragon Dance, pop into Bookish on Hargreaves St and chat the wonderful Wendy and Wendy😊

Sunny and Nai Nai can't wait for their town's annual dragon parade. But when the loongs don't wake up, Sunny must find a way to save the family tradition.
Dragon Dance is a story of hope, resilience and creativity, and a celebration of the much-loved Chinese dragons on the Australian goldfields.
