Senior School

Year 12 Examinations
Official classes for our Year 12 students concluded on Wednesday 21 October. Our Year 12 Class of 2015 can be proud of their work and achievements. We have seen this group of students achieve excellent results in academic performance, in work practices, in extra-curricular activities, as well as provide leaders in student activities, sport, music and community involvement.
The VCAA examination period commenced on Wednesday 21 October and concluded Wednesday 18 November. Our exam supervisors have commented that this year’s students have been the best they have supervised over the years. Congratulations to all Year 12 students on the perfect start to their exams.
I am sure this is due in part to the practice exams held at the mid-year and over the September holidays and the high expectations communicated by Year 12 teachers. It has been very pleasing to see the high number of students who have been at school meeting with their teachers, attending revision lectures and completing practice exam papers. Thank you to the Year 12 teachers who give freely of their time and work diligently in assisting students, marking practice exams and holding revision lectures to assist students in preparing thoroughly for these exams.
Senior students are encouraged to put in their optimal effort and see their teachers for additional assistance during this study time. Revising effectively can make all the difference to the final study scores.
Some tips for managing exam time effectively are:
- Use your reading time productively. During this time decide the order of questions you will complete and use this time to plan how you can organise a timeline to complete all questions in the given exam time.
- As you are responding to questions jot down ideas that come to mind for answering other questions, in the margin against such questions. When you finally get to these questions they will be easier to complete and you won’t have forgotten these ideas.
- You are required to remain in the exam for the entire period of time. Make sure every second of your exam time counts. Use this time to complete every question. It is not as useful to only complete a few questions perfectly because each question is worth a limited amount of marks: you need to complete all questions. If you don’t know an answer to a question, use some information in the question to write a response. The alternative is getting no marks if you do not respond to a question.
- If you finish an exam early don’t just sit there and look around the room. Review all your questions and answers and make sure you have answered each question thoroughly. You will find this time useful in being able to improve upon your answers.
I wish all senior school students the very best for their exams.

Valedictory Dinner
On Wednesday night (21 October) we farewelled our Year 12 students at the Valedictory Dinner held at The Sofitel on Collins. Over 700 people attended the dinner and many awards were presented. Seeing these wonderful young adults completing high school was a proud moment for many of us.
It is hard to believe that six years ago they were only eleven or twelve year olds and starting high school for the first time. The dinner was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the students’ achievements with their parents and teachers.
I would like to thank Ms Nicole Filippou and Mr Simon Cameron for all of their hard work in the organisation of this event.
Congratulations to Bartholomew Heeren who won the prestigious Caltex Best All Rounder award.
