Ramadan Kareem!

As a culturally diverse school, it is important to recognise those who are celebrating various cultural events. Ramadan is a holy month in the Muslim calendar, whereby Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset for around 29-30 days. Ramadan is also one of the five pillars in Islam.

For some staff and students at WHSC, Ramadan is an important time and we are always looking for ways to support our staff and students.

For those celebrating Ramadan, here are some things you can do to help us with your Ramadan journey:

  • Tell your teachers that you are celebrating Ramadan so that we can best support you on your journey!

  • If you are uncomfortable with an activity, let your teacher know and they can come to an alternative solution with you.

  • If you are needing a space for prayer, there is a prayer mat in the small meeting room in front of the general office. Students are welcome to use that during lunch time.

For those not celebrating Ramadan, here are some tips and advice on how to best support those celebrating Ramadan this month:

  • Be understanding and flexible: Fasting staff and students may experience fatigue or difficulty concentrating, particularly as the day progresses. Please be patient and considerate.

  • Be extra supportive during the last week of Ramadan: This week is particularly significant for Muslims, as they focus on increased worship and spiritual reflection.

  • Provide a quiet space for prayer: Muslims will need to preform their daily prayers during the day. If possible, help them find a quiet area where they can pray undisturbed.

  • Be mindful of food and drink: Be aware that fasting Muslims cannot eat or drink from sunrise to sunset, so offering snacks or planning food-related activities during the day might make them feel uncomfortable.

Finally, if you want to wish our Muslim students, staff and members of our community a happy Ramadan, 'Ramadan Kareem' or 'Ramadan Mubarak' are two greetings you can use!
