Year 10 Parent Meet and Greet

On Wednesday 1st March we welcomed our Year 10 parents on site to meet with each other and to chat with our leading teachers. Year 10 Positive Climate Leader, Vanessa Lattanzio, and Year 10 Coordinator, Jeremy Leeson, introduced themselves and explained how their roles will support and engage our students. Assistant Principal for Senior School, Gina Carroll, discussed items such as VCE/VCE-VM pathways, and timelines for subject selections (term 3). Ms Carroll also discussed her involvement with the Senior School Improvement Team and how they will be seeking parent feedback shortly on methods and tools to boost school community engagement.

Thank you to those parents who were able to take the time out to visit us on campus.

Please find the Year 10 Parent Information video, recorded by Vanessa Lattanzio.

Year 10 Elevate Program

On the first of March, we attended a class with a company called Elevate, the class was called study sensei. In this class we were taught effective methods to study, involving proportions for different assignments, or classes, and how we can manage our time while doing it. During this class we learnt different ways to approach studying for exams, in blocks of three to four weeks, spacing out the workload, from things like taking notes, practicing it to get it into our heads, and as many practice exams as we can, making the conditions for the practice exam more and more similar to the normal exam. By doing this method we were taught that it will help majorly prepare us for any exam we have coming up. This class was worth wat more than what it was, it taught us strategies and techniques we can keep with us, and that we can use all the way through to year 12, and further. It was a really good experience, and something I would definitely recommend to all students.

VCE-VM Work Related Skills

Today, the Year 11 and 12 Vocational Major students met and interviewed business owners working in the trade industry. Year 11 students developed questions to ask about skills that are needed, how they continue to develop themselves as workers and leaders, difficulties in their field, and what opportunities studying a trade has given them. The year 12 students focused their questions on workplace culture, tips for young employees, work/life balance and looking after the mental/physical health of employees.

Students loved hearing the career pathways that the presenters have taken to get them to where they are today as well as the ins and outs of running a business. Here are some student comments:

I learned about the struggles and rewards for running your own business and working for someone, as well and the pros and cons of working in different workplaces.

I learnt that carpentry can lead to other jobs. I also learnt you need to be really dedicated to your job and look after your mental health because that can really impact on your ability work.

I found the incursion to be really helpful as I could ask questions and I could learn more about what I was going to be doing for my future.

We listened to 3 people speak about their current/previous career. They talked about strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats within their careers. I learnt about how to counteract against certain situations, that may be faced when making a business of my own.

We heard from 3 people talking about current and previous careers. They were talking about where they have worked and what business they owned and how to run them. I learned about the business industry and how much stress they have to push though.
