Bulli Mine Disaster Commemoration Service
It was a privilege and honour to represent the school community at the 2023 Bulli Mine Disaster Commemorative Service today, which was held at the Bulli Anglican Church. This disaster occurred on 23 March 1887 where 81 miners lost their lives, some as young as 14 years of age. We listened to several politicians pay their respects along with a descendant of Sir Humphry Davy, who invented ‘The Miner’s Safety Lamp’. The ‘Arcadians Lamplighters’ sung three songs in tribute to the miners and their families. This is a significant event in Bulli’s History and one always to remember in prayer.
At the conclusion of the service we laid a bouquet of flowers at the memorial site in honour of those who died. Thank you to Mrs Smith who accompanied us at the service.

Year 1 - Gymnastics
Year 1 and Kinder continue to enjoy participating in the Gymnastics Sporting Schools program on Tuesdays where they have been learning to perform movement skills in a variety of sequences. This week year 1 focussed on balancing and the skills required to stay balanced. The students were given opportunities to use the hula hoop and perform locomotor skills using different body parts to travel in different directions with a focus on control and balance.

Get ready for The Big Vegie Crunch!
On Thursday 30 March at 10am our school will be joining hundreds of schools across NSW to break the record for the most students crunching vegetables simultaneously.
But we need your help to make it a success!
On Thursday 30 March, please pack your child a container of vegetables (not fruit this time) for them to crunch on.
Need some ideas?
- carrot, celery, cucumber – cut into sticks or left whole
- capsicum – cut into sticks or wedges
- corn – raw baby corn spears or a cooked corn cob
- broccoli or cauliflower florets - raw or lightly cooked to keep their crunch
- tomatoes – small cherry tomatoes or a large tomato that can be eaten like an apple
- beans or snow peas - raw or lightly cooked to keep their crunch
- mushrooms – sliced or left whole
- if fresh veg isn’t possible, try canned or frozen vegetables instead
The canteen will be providing corn on the cob in support of the Big Vegie Crunch. These can be ordered online using quickcliq.com.au. The cost is $1.20ea
Big Vege Crunch
During Week 10 (March 27
- March 31) St Joseph’s will be celebrating the Big Veggie Crunch. This is a health promotion to encourage children in NSW to eat enough veggies on a daily basis. On Thursday 30 March at 10am the Big Veggie Crunch will attempt to break the record for the highest number of children eating vegetables at the same time in NSW.
The Year 6 Health and Wellbeing Committee have this week provided each class with a Big Veggie Crunch table to track the veggies each class is crunching that week and a competition entry form. To promote the healthy eating initiative, we will be running a school wide competition for students to design a Veggie Mascot. The Health and Wellbeing committee will be looking for the most fun, cool and creative design. The winner from each grade will be shared in the newsletter and the top 5 entries will be submitted to the Big Veggie Crunch website, where the winning mascot will be used in all promotional material and resources NSW wide for the 2024 Big Veggie Crunch.
Please return all competition entries to the office by Wednesday 29 March.

Thank you to all the Dads who have joined or shown an interest in The Fathering Project.
During Term 1, in Weeks 8, 9 and 10 we are encouraging dads to bring their child/ren to the School Library in the mornings to read and help your children find books of interest. We thought this would be a great chance to be further involved in your child’s learning and help to foster a love of reading.
The Library will be open from 8.30am. Anybody who has any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Matthews.
Thanks again and can't wait to see you there!
2023 Premier's Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2023 has just begun! The Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and to enable students to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.
The Challenge began on the 27 February and ends on 18 August. During this time, students who read books from a set list and log their reading online will have successfully completed the challenge and will receive acknowledgement of their achievement from the Premier of New South Wales.
Parents of students who wish to take on the challenge should register by clicking the consent button in COMPASS. Once this has been completed a username, password and further information about how to log your books and where to access the complete Premier’s Reading Challenge booklist will be forwarded by the school. Classroom teachers and the library will keep track of all books read during class time and add these to the student’s reading logs.
This year we invite all students from K-6 to participate in the 2023 Premier's Reading Challenge.
The challenge is not a competition but a way to foster a love of reading for pleasure for all our Kindergarten to Year 6 students.
Usernames will be sent home tomorrow for those that have completed the online consent.
If you have any questions or need any further assistance please feel free to reach out to Mrs Pirie in the library on Mondays or Tuesdays.

Cross Country Carnival
It was so lovely to enjoy our first whole school carnival for 2023, together at Bulli Park on Friday. Congratulations to all the students who participated competitively or in the fun event! It was a hot day, but the smiles and effort from the students prevailed. Thank you to all the parents, carers and friends who attended the carnival and cheered on the runners. Thank you to our generous P & F for the refreshing ice blocks. These were thoroughly enjoyed by all!
A special thank you to the parent officials and staff for their generosity of time and effort before, during and after the carnival. These events take time to prepare and everything is done to benefit the students at St Joseph’s. All of the extra assistance and organisation are appreciated, especially those who assisted from the early hours of the day and came back to help us unload at school.
