Maths in the Classroom

Our Prep students have started the year ready to learn! They started the year learning about the days of the week and what they do on different days at school. They then moved onto learning about numbers, in particular focusing on counting, writing and ordering numbers 1 to 20. This week in Prep students are learning about length. They are comparing objects and using words such as shorter and longer to describe the length of objects.

In Prep students are provided opportunities to learn in groups, independently and with 1-1 support from our amazing LSOs and teachers! It is important that they are able to complete hands on activities to help them to better understand  what they are learning!

In the Year 1/2 class this term, students have been learning about our base 10 number system, how to give and follow directions using directional language and learning about the different Australian coins and their values.

Students are given lots of opportunities to reinforce their learning by working as a whole class, in small groups and independently. It is great to see so much amazing learning happening in our Year 1/2 classroom!

Maths at Home

Regularly engaging in Maths with your child has proven to have a positive impact on student outcomes. Engaging in a problem-solving, working through strategies and solutions, supports your child's thinking, engagement, and genuine love of Maths. Here are a couple of problems you can do with your child at home.

Problem #1

Look at a calendar. Draw a square around 9 numbers. What do you notice?

Prompt: If I tell you the top left number, can you tell me the bottom right number?

If I tell you the middle number, what can you tell me?

What if the figure changes to a rectangle? A cross?

Problem #2

Some people claim rolling a six is harder than rolling a two. Roll a dice many times, collecting and recording your data. Make a convincing argument using your data. Extend the idea to a 10-sided dice or rolling two dice and finding the sum.
