Teaching and Learning in 1W

We have had a very busy term in 1W. We have been busy building our numeracy wall where we can share and reflect on our learning. We have explored the days, months and seasons and looked at how trees change throughout the year. We have investigated place value, and focused on understanding tens, ones and hundreds through hands on activities and games.

In literacy, we have engaged in some hands on activities such as letter formation with playdough. We have been exploring letter blends and rhyming, and examining how we can change the starting letter (onset) to create new words. We have had fun learning how to create rhyming words, and identifying rhyming words in texts. We have also been focusing on where our letters start and finish. We enjoy sustained reading every morning to begin our school day.

During our free learning time on Fridays, we are learning how to problem solve and play fairly. We play group games and have choice in our activities. We have been working on learning how we show our emotions with our face and body language. We played Freeze and had to display a specific emotion when the music stopped. We enjoyed this activity, and were very good at it!

In our Bully Free Zone incursion, some of us were able to get up and do some acting in the play. We learned about what bullying is, and how to be kind to our friends.

We end some days with a 5 minute ‘body scanning’ meditation to help us relax before we transition from school to home. This helps us be aware of how we are feeling and prevent big feelings from becoming overwhelming.

We have had a fantastic term and are looking forward to our holiday break and coming back for new explorations in Term 2, including our excursion to Coal Creek. Happy Easter!
