Professional Learning Community 1 (Grade 1)

We cannot believe we are already approaching the end of Term 1. Our Grade 1 students have had an action filled term and the fun continues with our Grade 1 team planning lots of exciting activities for Term 2. We are super proud of all Grade 1 students for their achievements this term and cannot wait to see what they will achieve next term.

In Reading, students have been learning strategies to monitor and self-correct and how to summarise. Students have thoroughly enjoyed reading books written by some amazing authors including Pamela Allen and Aaron Blabey. At home you can support your student by discussing their readers and summarising the key events.

Our Writing this fortnight has continued to focus on volunteering and providing a service to others. Students have used their knowledge from the Emergency Service incursion to create some very interesting and creative narratives about a natural disaster. It has been great to see students use their understandings of how stories are structured in their own writing pieces. Students have now begun brainstorming our arguments and constructing their persuasive piece ‘We can all be heroes’.

Last week we practised telling the time to the hour and half hour in Numeracy. We looked at telling the time on both analogue and digital clocks, and how we use minutes and hours to measure time. From this week until the end of term, students will be learning strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.

A reminder to parents, Grade 1 students will be attending an Earth Ed STEM program on Thursday 30th (1A, 1D) and Friday 31st (1B, 1C) of March. Students will get to learn lots of exciting things about science through hands-on experiences.

Professional Learning Community 2 (Grade 2)

In the last 2 weeks, we have been having a lot of fun in our classroom! We have been learning all about measurement through a fun task called the Potato Olympics. We measured all sorts of things, like how far we could roll a potato and how tall they were!

We have also been practising our writing skills by working on a topic called "All About Me." We wrote about things like our favourite foods, our families, and our hobbies. We even got to draw pictures to go along with our writing!

In Reading, we have been working on a skill called inferring. That means we use clues from the story to figure out things that the author doesn't tell us directly. It's been really interesting to read different stories and try to figure out what might happen next!

We have had a great time learning and having fun together in our classroom. We can't wait to see what we will learn next term!

Grade 2

Professional Learning Community 3 (Grade 3)

What a busy last few weeks of Term 1 we have had! Congratulations to everyone who completed NAPLAN testing. We are so proud of your efforts and how you all gave each test your personal best.

This week we are off to swimming lessons where we will be learning lots of important water safety skills and improving our swimming skills too!

In literacy this week we are learning to infer in Reading by using clues from the text and our prior knowledge and in Writing we are writing a narrative about what might happen if our wishes came true.

In Numeracy we are learning all about 2D and 3D shapes.

The PLC3 team wish everybody a happy and restful break and we look forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces again in Term 2!

Professional Learning Community 4 (Grade 4)

What a wonderful, jam-packed term this has been!

This week our specialist timetable changed due to planning week. All teachers from each PLC have a day where they plan Literacy and Numeracy for the following term. Our day was Tuesday and we are excited to plan purposeful lessons to engage our students ready for Term 2.

During the first half of the term some of our lessons will focus around our camp to Cave Hill Creek in Week 4. Some examples of this include writing planners which contain descriptive language about being in the bush. During the second half of the term our focus turns to our History topic of ‘First Contacts’ where students will investigate how and why life changed in the past, and identify aspects of the past that have remained the same.

Professional Learning Community 5 (Grade 5)

Well done to everyone for their efforts on Sports Day last week and to all of our parents for coming to support and cheer us on. I’d also like to congratulate all of our students for completing their first full online NAPLAN! We saw some amazing efforts and are very proud of the persistence and concentration we witnessed.

However, our Term is not over just yet - we have one last hurrah in store. Next week we are heading to Sovereign Hill’s Costume Schools, where we will be transported into the 1850s. We ask that you please make sure that all students have permission to attend, so we can begin to finalise numbers. To allow us a smooth transition into the living museum that is Sovereign Hill, we ask that students please do their best to meet the requirements specified below:

Recess and lunch is packed in separate brown paper bags, clearly named (spares will also be available at school on the Tuesday and Wednesday morning).
Students need to wear black shoes or boots (black or brown) with no displayed logos.
For the girls we ask that you wear a pair of long white socks and that any hair long enough is parted in the middle and placed into 2 plaits or braids.
Boys if you could please wear black socks.
It is also important that students have not got any excess jewellery including smart watches. The only jewellery that will be allowed are earrings that are plain studs or simple sleepers.
On the day please ensure that you arrive promptly as we will be leaving shortly after the bell.

Professional Learning Community 6 (Grade 6)

Dear Parents,

PLC6 are excited to share with you some updates on what your children have been learning in the classroom.

In Reading, we have been focusing on making connections. Students have been learning how to connect what they are reading to their own experiences, other texts they have read, and the world around them. This skill helps them to better understand what they are reading and make deeper connections with the text.

In Writing, we have been exploring narratives and the importance of making choices. Students have been practising how to start a narrative by making a choice that sets the stage for the story. They have also been learning how to use descriptive language to create a vivid picture in the reader's mind.

In Numeracy, we have been working on the order of operations, commonly known as BODMAS. Students have been learning how to solve equations by following a specific order of operations to get the correct answer. This is an essential skill that will help them in more complex math concepts.

We also want to congratulate our Grade 6 students on their excellent performance at the Years 3-6 athletics day. The event was a great success, with students participating in a range of athletic events and demonstrating their skills and abilities. We are proud of all the students who participated, and we would like to give a special shoutout to not only those who won their events, but to those who tried their absolute best! Well done all!
