English

This semester, Scoresby Secondary College's Year 7 and 8 English students have been developing their narrative writing and reading responding skills for their upcoming assessment tasks. They have worked in numerous rotations to help broaden their knowledge of the subject and grow their descriptive abilities.

Our Year 7 students have been introduced to the structure of a narrative arc, using workshop rotations to develop their understanding of an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. Their descriptive writing abilities were extended through no lessons on the five senses, dynamic dialogue, and through weekly writing tasks organised by Ms Shirer and Mrs. Bartlett. The Year 7 students are currently drafting their own narrative, and are in the process of proofreading and giving peer feedback.

In  Year 8, students have been developing their text response writing by analysing the award-winning Victoria-based novel Runner. Students have delved into the history of Victoria after the First World War, focusing on the plight of Richmond residents and the reign of the notorious gangster Squizzy Taylor. Students have engaged with the text through developing wanted posters, researching key characters, and participating in multi-class quizzes and other fun activities. The Year 8 students are currently drafting their text response, which has been scaffolded through multiple proposition and essay writing rotations.

It has been wonderful to see how creative and enthusiastic our students have been in all of their English classes. With this as their foundation, we can be sure to see them move onto great things in the near future.
