Junior School Report

Year 7 Happenings

Five weeks into the first term and a lot of activity has been occurring in the Junior School. On Tuesday 21 February a number of Year 7 parents attended the Year 7 Information Night and met with our Principal Class members, Mr Donovan Lawrence (Year 7 Coordinator) and Mrs Kiriaki Caracasidis (Head of Junior School).

The presentation helped our parents gain further insight into our school, extra-curricular, support and extension programs as well as the daily organisational procedures necessary to support our students. Details about the upcoming camp, Camp Rumbug, were discussed and parents had the opportunity to hear first-hand, from our Junior School Leaders, just how much they enjoyed it. These Leaders said ‘The camp engages students and encourages them to take on challenges and develop leadership and team skills.’ I would like to thank Addi Jones and Trin Ward, both of Year 9, for their input and help during the evening. Many thanks also to Adam Du of Year 8 who entertained parents and staff with his magnificent piano performance.

Ms Chris Daicos, our guest speaker for the Years 8 – 10 information night, presented a witty and very informative session about practical approaches to:

  • Develop a growth mindset in our children, and
  • Build resilience in children.

Chris managed to re-affirm how well we all support our students as well as provide more insight into strategies that can encourage problem-solving skills, copying with anxiety and stress and just about all things to help the development of self in our children.

Our students in Year 7 and Year 8 had the opportunity to participate in a ‘Talk Money’ workshop. The workshop is designed to help students learn money lessons for life, to be confident talking about money and to make informed financial decisions. The students investigated ways in which money is saved and spent. Many thanks to Ms Kim for organising the sessions.

We are about developing respect, confidence and leadership, amongst many other things. Ms Shirer our Student Leader Coordinator has worked constructively and diligently with our junior school students to encourage student voice in our school. Here is her message;

‘I am pleased to announce that Student Leadership is truly on its way at Scoresby Secondary College for 2023. Students were asked to nominate peers who exhibit the qualities of leaders at the beginning of the term, and just recently we announced some of our Junior School Leaders for 2023.

Congratulations to Addi Jones and Trin Ward  who will be our Junior School Captains, as well as Lia Amor, Gilbert Magart, Leroy Murphy  and Bella Foden as our SRC Leaders. These students will be actively working with our Senior School Captains and staff to enhance student voice and agency.

Opportunities for our Year 7 cohort will be available after their return from Camp.’

Many opportunities are to be had at Scoresby Secondary College. We await the return of our Year 7 students, from camp, to enjoy their many stories of achievement and of course fun. We hope that you encourage your student to actively seek student leadership positions at Year 7.

As we move forward into the second half of Term 1, I would encourage all junior school students to maintain a positive and constructive disposition and maintain good learning habits.
